【人と人ならざる者か心臓を交換し、互いに運命共同体となるための契り】
[When man and monster exchange their hearts, it is a promise that their destinies will be intertwined]
人間とモンスターは、少なくともミッドガルドの地においては共存してきた。お互いに憎しみを抱くこともなく、生存のためという特殊な状況を除けば、殺生が行われることも少ない。そもそも、憎しみという感情は人間固有のものなのである。しかし、この人間同士の憎しみが、モンスターたちに波及したことは否めない。現在では、人間の配下となったオークやゴブリンなどが、ほかの人間を襲う――といった光景も見受けられる。
Humans and monsters coexist in the land of Midgard. Without mutual hatred for one-another, there is rarely any killing, outside of situations in which it is necessary for survival. From the start, the emotion called hatred was a characteristic of humanity. However, it is incontrovertible fact that humanity's hatred spread to monsters as well. Now, it is not uncommon to catch sight of the humans' subordinated orcs and goblins attacking other humans.
そうした通常の共存関係とは別に、両者の間には、契約と呼ばれる特殊な関係が存在する。これは、人間の負の感情 （怒りや死、悲しみ、絶望など）が高まったときに、それを察知したモンスター（精霊・妖精含む）たちとの間で取り交わされるもので、運命共同体ともいうべき関係を結ぶことである。これは、互いの利害が一致したときに心臓を交換することで成立するものであるため、どちらかの死は、両者の死を意味するようになる。
Apart from the normal relationship of coexistence between the two, there also exists a special relationship called a pact. When a human's negative emotions (anger and death, sorrow, despair, etc.) swell, those emotions are exchanged among the monsters who have sensed it (spirits and fairies, for example) creating a link between them; this might better be called sharing a common destiny. As this mutual agreement is established through the exchange of their hearts, the death of one means the death of the other as well.
そもそも人間は、負の感情を振り切るために強大な力を求めることが多く、それゆえ契約の相手には、より高位のモンスターを望む傾向が強い。また、契約の際、人間側はモンスターに対して、もっとも大切な身体の器官（または機能）を１つ提供する必要がある。契約相手が強大なモンスターであるほど、その代償は大きい。
First of all, there are many humans who wish for great power in order to free themselves from their negative emotions; there is therefore a strong trend toward longing for more high-ranking monsters. Still, at the moment of forming the pact, the human must offer up one of their most important organs (or senses). The stronger the monster they pact with, the greater the compensation.
一方、モンスターは何を求めて契約を行うのだろうか。これについては諸説あるが、人間の持つ、持続的で、強い負の感情に、モンスターが本能的に惹かれてしまうのではないか―――という説が有力である。本来、生きとし生ける者は、創造主たる神の意志を体現しているはずである。だが、人間だけが、エゴを持ち、強い憎しみや怒りといった、さまざまな負の感情を抱く。絶対の存在である神の操作すら及ばない人間に、モンスターたちも無意識のうちに憧れに似た感情を秘めているのだとしても不思議ではない。
On the other hand, what could the monsters want, to make a pact for it? There are various theories concerning this, but the most influential is this: "Perhaps they are instinctually drawn to humanity's continuously powerful negative emotions." Originally, God's major creations should have embodied His will, in living for the sake of living. However, humans alone, with their egos, carried various strong negative emotions such as hatred and anger. It is no wonder that monsters would unconsciously yearn to have similar feelings to those of humans, who are beyond even the absolute authority of god.
誇り高きレッドドラゴンが、蔑むべき人間であるカイムと契約に至った背景には、ドラゴンが窮地に立たされていたという要因も確かにあろう。しかしその一方で、恐ろしいまでに苛烈で、それでいて悲しいまでに空虚なカイムの矛盾に満ちた精神に、レッドドラゴンが密かに欲情していた―――とも考えられるのである。
It is certainly true that the primary reason for the proud Red Dragon to have made a pact with Caim, whom she should have despised for his humanity, was to save herself from her dilemma. But alongside that, there was Caim's soul - terrifying yet stern, sorrowful yet empty - a soul overflowing with contradictions, which she also secretly desired.

Its shape and size differ depending on the pact partner, and looks much like a brand. In the case that it appears somewhere easily visible to the human eye, naturally that is a strong indication to all around that here is someone who made a pact.

Pacts are ordinarily formed between a single human and a monster. However, exceptional cases do exist, such as the pact between Arioch and the two spirits Undine and Salamander.
