rikoren早朝、おれたちは朝日が昇ったばかりの村を後にした。
We leave the village at the break of dawn.
シーナの案内で山道を進む。皆が黙々と歩き、会話が交わされることはない。あのシーナまでが、無言のまま馬を進めている。竜との戦いを前にして、緊張しているのか。
Following Sheena's lead, we make our way up the mountain path. Everyone walks in silence, not exchanging a single word of conversation. Even Sheena remains silent as he leads the horse ahead. We're about to fight a dragon, so maybe it's nervousness.
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・ナッシュ。」
Humphrey
"...........Nash."
ナッシュ
「ん？」
Nash
"Mm?"
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・結局ここまで、巻き込んでしまったな・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
".......Sorry, for getting you involved in all this......."
ナッシュ
「まぁ、成り行きだしな。」
「どちらかと言うとオウランに・・・」
Nash
> "Well, things just happened this way."
> "Who told you about my talk with Oulan..."

ナッシュ
「お人好しが過ぎて貧乏くじを引くのがおれの星まわりみたいだから気にしてないさ。」
Nash
"I'm a nice guy who's probably fated to always get the short end of the stick, so don't worry about it."
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
".................."
ナッシュ
「お姫様をたすけに、竜退治さ。おとぎ話の主人公みたいだしな。」
Nash
"Save the princess, defeat the dragon. It's like we're the heroes in a fairy tale."
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・そうか・・・・」
Humphrey
"..........Is that so...."

"Eh? What're you talking about???"
ナッシュ
「あ、いや、なんでも・・・・」
Nash
"Ah, no, nothing...."
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」

シーナ
「さて、そろそろのはずなんだが・・・・・」
Sheena
"Now then, we should be getting there soon....."
フッチ
「！！！！」
Futch
"!!!!"
ナッシュ
「近いようだな。」
Nash
"Seems close."
オウラン
「急いだ方が良さそうだね。」
Oulan
"Guess we'd better hurry then."
ナッシュ
「ヤツに村に飛び立たれたら元も子もないからな。」
Nash
"If he flies off to the village this'll have been a pointless trip."
しばらく行くと、山の中腹の岩場に、ぽっかりと大きな口を開けた洞窟が現れた。
Soon enough, in the rocky mountain wall, a large cave mouth comes into view.
シーナ
「この中でジョナが消えちまったんだ。気をつけてくれよな、竜にも、妙な光にも。」
Sheena
"Jonah disappeared around here. Be careful guys, there's a dragon here, and weird lights too."
ナッシュ
「ああ、わかってるさ。」
Nash
"Right, I got it."
おれたちは手早く荷を解いて、戦いの準備を整え、作戦を確認した。おれとオウラン、ハンフリーが攻撃、シーナは後衛で援護をする。フッチはさらに後ろで控え、おれたちにアドバイスを送る、と言う作戦だ。
We quickly fix our affairs, getting our battle preparations in order, and confirming tactics. Oulan, Humphrey and I will attack, while Sheena backs us up as the rear guard. Meanwhile, Futch will keep himself further back, and give us tactical advice.
フッチ
「ブライトは、ここで待ってるんだ。・・・・・・おまえには見せたくないから・・・・」
Futch
"Bright, wait here. ......I don't want you to see this...."
ブライト
「クア・・・・ァァ・・・」
Bright
"KUA....aa..."
これから起ころうとしていることを、察しているのか。ブライトは寂しげに鳴いてフッチの腕から降りると、入口脇の木の根元に、自分からうずくまった。
What happens afterwards, I couldn't have guessed. Bright descends from Futch's arm with a lonely chirp, goes over to the tree roots growing by the entrance, and crouches there alone.
ブライトを振り返りながら歩むフッチの肩を叩いて、おれたちは竜の住む洞窟へと進んだ。
While Futch turns to look back at Bright as he walks, we advance onwards into the dragon's cave.
おれたちは慎重に洞窟を進んだ。洞窟内は、何かの苔が発光しているのかほのかに明るいため、松明を使わないでも進んで行けたが、一歩進むごとに不安感は増していく。狭い洞窟内では戦いには不向きだが、それは相手も同じことだし、外で自由に動き回られてしまっては、こちらが不利になりかねない。
We cautiously advance towards the cave. Inside, there's some sort of faintly glowing moss, enough that we no longer have any need for torches; nonetheless we each begin to feel a growing sense of unease as we move on. A narrow cave like this isn't really suitable for fighting in, something my companions probably agree on - we'd be able to move around freely outside, but in here we've got a huge handicap.
シーナの話によると、もう少し行った先は多少広くなっていて、そこに黒竜が潜んでいるらしい。いや、らしい、と言うのは間違いだ。一歩進むごとに、ヤツの気配、そして唸り声は確実に大きくなっている。
According to Sheena, it should widen a bit once we're farther in, so that's probably where the black dragon's lying in wait. No, wait, let me rephrase that. With every step we take, signs of his presence and the sound of his growls get more and more obvious.
黒竜が近い。顔を見合わせ、呼吸を整えて・・・
The black dragon is close. We exchange glances, catching our breath...
ナッシュ
「なにっ！？」
Nash
"What-!?"
しまった！！やつはとっくにこちらに気づいていたんだ！！！！突然に飛び出して来た黒竜は、おれたちの目の前で炎を吐くべく大きな口を開けた。
Shit!! It knows we're coming!!!! The black dragon suddenly rushes out, opening its jaws wide to spit out a fireball.
ナッシュ
「散れ！！！」
Nash
"Run!!!"
とっさに散らばって、火球を避ける。同時にハンフリー、オウランの二人に素早く目配せして、竜を取り囲む配置をとった。
Everyone disperses immediately, dodging the fireball. At the same time Humphrey and Oulan, exchanging a glance, move to surround the dragon.
ナッシュ
「フッチ！！竜を見て、何か分かることはあるか！？」
Nash
"Futch!! Look at the dragon, are you getting any ideas!?"
フッチ
「・・・・・・・まだ、若い竜みたいです。二歳か、三歳くらいの・・・・・」
Futch
".......It looks like it's still young. Two, maybe three years old....."
ナッシュ
「それで？」
Nash
"And?"
フッチ
「それぐらいになると、もう鱗は固くなってるから、武器の攻撃はほとんど防がれてしまうと思います。」
Futch
"I think around that age, its scales will have hardened, so it's protected from practically all physical attacks."
ナッシュ
「だろうな、それは昨日すでに・・・・ おわっ！！！！」
Nash
"Well yeah, we figured that out yesterday....Woah!!!!"
いきなりおれを狙って、黒竜が尻尾を振りまわして来た。間一髪、後ろに飛び退いたが、尻尾はおれの腕をかすめる。そしておれがひるんだのを見て、竜は突進して来た。
Suddenly, the dragon swings its tail in my direction. I jump out of the way, missing it by a hair's breadth, the tail just grazing my arm. Having seen me flinch, the dragon comes rushing towards me.
ナッシュ
「くそっ！腹ペコのくせして、やる気満々じゃねえか！！みんな！うちあわせ通り行くぞ！！持久戦に持ち込んでも、ここなら昨日みたいに逃げられることはない！！今度こそしとめられるはずだ！！！」
Nash
"Shit-! This thing gets really motivated when it's hungry!! Everybody! Let's do this together!! We're continuing yesterday's fight, but now it's got nowhere to run!! This time we're definitely bringing it down!!!"
ハンフリー
「・・・・・ブレスには、要注意だ。」
Humphrey
".....Watch out for its breath."
フッチ
「まだ若い竜だから、一度使ったら、しばらくは使えないはずです。」
Futch
"Since it's still a young dragon, if it uses that move once, it shouldn't use it again for a while."
ナッシュ
「わかった！！！」
Nash
"Got it!!!"
次のブレスが来る前に、できるだけダメージを与えておきたいものだ。竜の背後を取ったオウランが、すかさず攻撃を仕掛けた。
Before its next breath, I want to damage it as much as possible. Taking the dragon's back, Oulan attacks without delay.
オウラン
「オラァァァ！！！」
Oulan
"GRAaaa!!!"
オウランの一撃が黒竜の脇腹にまともに入った。いくら全身を硬い鱗で覆われていようとも防御の弱い箇所は確実に存在する。オウランは、そこに正確な打撃を入れていく。たまらず黒竜がオウランに身体を向けると、今度はハンフリーが大剣を振りかざす。
Oulan's attack hits the black dragon's flank dead-on. No matter how much of its body is covered with hard scales, there must still be a weak spot. Oulan is hitting it with precise blows. As the black Dragon turns to fend off Oulan's continuing attacks, Humphrey raises up his longsword.
ハンフリー
「ふんっ！！！！」
Humphrey
"Hrn-!!!!"
斬りつけたハンフリーの太刀は、岩さえ砕いてしまいそうな勢いだったがさすがに竜の鱗は強固だったのか、致命傷までは与えられなかった。やはり、持久戦になるのか・・・・？すると竜は、尻尾を激しく振りながら、後ずさりを始めた。
Humphrey swings his longsword with enough force to cut through rock, but as expected the dragon's hard scales prevent it from giving a fatal wound. This is going to be a really long battle, isn't it....? Just as the thought pops into my head, the dragon violently swings its tail, and I begin to back away.
シーナ
「壁を背にするつもりだ！」
Sheena
"Let's get its back to the wall!"
ナッシュ
「昨日の戦いを学習したってことか！？やばいな、同じ手は通用しないぞ！」
Nash
"Didn't you learn from yesterday's fight!? It's dangerous, don't try that move again!"
黒竜は首を左右に振って威嚇しながら、ついに壁を背にして立った。そして正面からおれたちと向かい合うと、身体を反らし、大きく息を吸い込んだ。
The dragon waves its head menacingly from side to side, eventually moving to stand with its back to the wall. With us facing it from the front, it bends its body, and takes a deep breath.
ナッシュ
「まさかっ！？」
Nash
"Don't tell me-!?"
竜が大きく口を開けた瞬間に、灼熱の炎が洞窟内にほとばしった。間一髪・・・・・・・・ 回避が遅れていたら、全身黒こげになっていただろう。
The dragon opens its mouth wide, and an in instant the cave is filled with scorching flames. I got out in the nick of time........ If I'd been late to dodge my entire body would probably have been burned to a crisp.
シーナ
「おいおい、話が違うぞ！！しばらくブレスは使えないんじゃなかったのか！？」
Sheena
"Hey wait a minute, this isn't what you told me!! Wasn't it not supposed to be able to use its breath for a little while!?"
フッチ
「そんな・・・・ そんなはずは無いのに・・・・・」
Futch
"That.... That wasn't what I expected....."
ナッシュ
「ちっ！野良育ちだけあって、普通の竜より口の行儀が悪いってことか！」
Nash
"Tch! It grew up in the wild, of course it's got bad manners compared to a normal dragon!"
シーナ
「軽口言ってる場合かよ！！」
Sheena
"This isn't the time for your wisecracking!!"
ナッシュ
「おまえに言われたくはないぜ・・・・」
Nash
"I don't wanna hear that from you...."
竜が首を巡らせて、順々におれたちを睨めつける仕草には余裕すら感じられる。竜のブレスのせいで洞窟内の温度は上がっていると言うのに、おれは背筋に冷たいものが走るのを感じた。
We can feel the dragon's glare as it turns its head to look at us. Because of its breath the temperature in the cave has risen considerably, and yet I feel a chill run down my spine.
たとえ幼くても、”竜”は確かに、この世界における最強の存在としておれたちの前に立ちはだかっているのだ。
It might be young, but this "dragon" standing before us is most definitely the strongest being in the world.
シーナ
「みんな、下がってくれ！札を使う！！たのむぜぇ・・・・ ジーンさんに、ねだってもらったとっておきなんだからな。昨日、さがしだすのに、どれだけかかったか・・・」
Sheena
"Guys, step back! I'm gonna use a scroll!! I'm counting on this.... I managed to coax Miss Jeane into giving me the most powerful one she's got. You don't know how far I went yesterday, to look for her..."
そう叫んで、シーナが札をかざした。今はそれしか、手が無い。おれたちは、とびすさってシーナが札を起動させるのを待った。
Shouting this, Sheena holds up the scroll. Right now this is all we've got, my hands are tied. We all jump back, waiting for Sheena to activate the scroll.
シーナ
「行くぜぇっ！！」
Sheena
"Here we goo-!!"
オウラン
「チャンスだね！！」
Oulan
"This is our chance!!"
ナッシュ
「待て！！オウラン！！！ヤツはダメージを受けていない！！！！」
Nash
"Wait!! Oulan!!! He's not taking any damage!!!!"
オウラン
「なにっ！？」
Oulan
"What-!?"
黒竜に札の攻撃は効かなかった。剣だけではなく、魔法まで防ぐとは・・・
The black dragon is unaffected by the scroll's attack. Not only swords, but magic too...
黒竜の激しい一撃に、オウランの身体ははじき飛ばされ、彼女はそのまま、洞窟の壁に叩きつけられてしまった。
With a violent blow, the black dragon sends Oulan flying straight into the wall.
シーナ
「オウラン！！！！！」
Sheena
"Oulan!!!!!"
すかさずシーナが駆け寄り、回復用の札を使おうとする。だが、黒竜はそれを見逃さず、二人めがけて突進して来た。
Sheena rushes over without a moment's delay, pulling out a healing scroll. But the black dragon doesn't miss this and comes rushing towards them.
ハンフリー
「行かせん！！」
Humphrey
"Stop!!"
とっさに割って入ったハンフリーを見て、黒竜は突進を止めた。こいつはやっかいだな。ヤツめ、戦った相手の技量をしっかりとみきわめてやがる。だが、黒竜が踏みとどまった今が好機だ。
Seeing Humphrey suddenly force his way through, the dragon stops its charge. The thing seems pretty bothered. He looks over his opponent, judging him with disdain. But if the black dragon keeps holding its ground, right now's a good opportunity.
ナッシュ
「目をふさいでろ！！」
Nash
"Close your eyes!!"
ナッシュ
「ハンフリー！！！」
Nash
"Humphrey-!!!"
ハンフリー
「わかっている。」
Humphrey
"Got it."
ナッシュ
「よし！この手でいけるぞ！！」
Nash
"Great! Here goes nothing!!"
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・何かをする気だ。」
Humphrey
"............It's doing something."
ナッシュ
「なんだと！？」
Nash
"What!?"
シーナ
「！！これだ！！！この光に、ジョナは！！！！光にさわるな！！触ると消えちまうぞ！！！！」
Sheena
"!! There!! That light, it's Jonah!!!! She touched the light!! She touched it and disappeared!!!!"
ナッシュ
「なんだとっ！？」
Nash
"What are you-!?"
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・！！！！！」
Humphrey
"..........!!!!!"
竜の正面で大剣をかざしていたハンフリーが、よけきれずに光球の一つに触れた途端、シーナの言うとおり、その姿が煙のように消えてしまった。
One of those balls of light touches Humphrey, who's standing before the dragon with his longsword raised, and just as Sheena said he disappears like smoke.
フッチ
「ハ・・・・・ハンフリーさん！！！！」
Futch
"S.....Sir Humphrey!!!!"
シーナ
「フッチ！！！！どう言うことだ！！！！なんなんだこの光は！？」
Sheena
"Futch!!!! Say something!!!! What the hell are these lights!?"
フッチ
「こんな力・・・・・ぼくだって・・・・・・」
Futch
"Such power.....even I......."
ナッシュ
「！！シーナ！！！！早くそこから逃げろ！！！！！」
Nash
"!! Sheena!!!! Get away from there, fast!!!!!"
ハンフリーが消え、あわてているうちに、残りの光球群が、まるで意志があるかのように次はシーナとオウラン達へと目がけて移動を始めていた。
In the panic following Humphrey's disappearance, the remaining balls of light have all begun to move towards Sheena and Oulan, as if they have a will of their own.
シーナ
「だめだ！！オウランが、まだ動けない！！！！」
Sheena
"It's no good!! Oulan still can't move!!!!"
ナッシュ
「くそっ！今、行く！！！！」
Nash
"Shit-! Wait, I'm coming!!!!"
しかし、おれがたどりつくより先に光球が二人を包み、その姿を跡形もなく消し去った。
However, the lights wrap around them just before I get there, and they vanish without a trace.
その光球を生み出すのに、どれほどの力を使ったのか。黒竜の動きも、明らかに鈍り、弱っているのがわかった。・・・・・・・・・今ならヤツを仕留められる。グローサー・フルスを振るえば・・・・・
How much power must it take, to create those balls of light. The black dragon's movement has noticeably slowed, I can tell it's grown weak. .........Now might be a good time to take that bastard down. If I use Grosser Fluss.....
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・やはり、フッチと一緒に・・・・
一人で黒竜を倒す
> .................Of course, together with Futch....
> Take down the black dragon alone

いや、グローサー・フルスをふるうのは簡単だ・・・・だが、それでは・・・・・・・・
No, Grosser Fluss is easy to use....but, then........
フッチ
「・・・・・・・ナッシュさん。」
Futch
".......Sir Nash."
ナッシュ
「なんだ？」
Nash
"What?"
フッチ
「ぼくが・・・・・あの竜を倒します・・・・ 手伝ってください・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"I.....to defeat that dragon.... Please help me........"
ナッシュ
「フッチ・・・・」
Nash
"Futch...."
フッチ
「あいつは・・・・・苦しんでいる、でも、ぼくには・・・あいつを救ってやることができない。だから・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"He's.....in pain, but, I...can't help him. So............."
ナッシュ
「いいのか・・・・？」
Nash
"Are you sure....?"
フッチ
「はい・・・・・・・・・・ ぼくがやらないと・・・・・・・・・ ハンフリーさんたちをたすけないと・・・・・」
Futch
"Yes.......... Since I can't do it......... Since I can't help Sir Humphrey and everyone....."
ナッシュ
「しかし、二人だけでは・・・・・・・」
Nash
"But, with just the two of us......."
フッチ
「竜騎士しか知らず、竜騎士以外には教えることは許されない竜の急所があります。それを・・・・・ぼくが・・・・・・・・・・ これしか、方法がないから・・・・・」
Futch
"Something only dragon knights know, which we are forbidden to teach to outsiders, is where the vital areas of a dragon are. This.....I'll.......... Just this, there's no techniques....."
ナッシュ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・よし！おれがヤツを引きつけるから、そのスキをつくんだ。いいな！？」
Nash
"..............Okay! I'll lure the bastard away, and you grab that chance. Got it!?"
フッチ
「わかりました。」
Futch
"I understand."
ナッシュ
「おっと！そうはいくかっ！！」
Nash
"Hup! Let's do this-!!"
黒竜が再び光球を出現させようと集中したところを、すかさず攻撃して、中断させる。何度も同じ手を食うわけにはいかない。そして、黒竜がひるんだその時を見逃さず、おれとフッチは同時にしかけた。
Without a moment's hesitation, I attack the black dragon where it's attempting to make those balls of light again, and break its concentration. It's impossible for me to do that trick very many times. So, in that moment when the black dragon flinches, Futch and I both move at once.
おれがけん制して、フッチが背後から槍で攻撃するが、竜の反撃もはげしい。なんとか、しのいではいるが、フッチは狙いをさだめることがなかなかできずにいる。
As I divert its attention, and Futch strikes his spear at its back, the dragon counters furiously. Somehow staving it off, Futch's determined aim easily enters the wound.
なら・・・・・おれは、ワイヤーを竜の右足に撃ち出し、身をひるがえして、左側にまわりこんで、両足にワイヤーをからめた。
Then.....I shoot a wire at the dragon's right foot, flipping it over, then go around its left side, entangling both feet in the wire.
ナッシュ
「フッチ！今だ！！とどめをっ！！！！」
Nash
"Futch! Now!! The finishing blow-!!!!"
フッチ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"..............."
ナッシュ
「フッチ！！！！」
Nash
"FUTCH!!!!"
フッチ
「もう少し・・・・・・ もう少し早く、おまえと出会っていたら・・・・ ・・・・・・・・・・・ごめんよ。これで終わらせるから・・・・」
Futch
"Just a little...... If I'd met you, just a little sooner.... ...........I'm sorry. This is the end...."
ブライト
「クアァァァァ・・・・・・・」
Bright
"KUAaaaa......."
フッチ
「！ブ、ブライト！？どうして、ここへ！！！」
Futch
"! B-Bright!? What are you doing here!!!"
洞窟の入り口で待っていたはずのブライトがいつの間にか、おれたちの背後に来ていたのだ。しかし、ブライトは驚くフッチの言葉には応えなかった。ただ黒竜をじっと見つめて、静かに鳴き声をあげた。
Bright, who was supposed to be waiting at the cave entrance, had come in without our noticing. But, Bright doesn't respond to Futch's words. He stares fixedly at the black dragon, letting out a quiet chirp.
ブライト
「クァァァァァァァァ・・・・・」
Bright
"Kuaaaaaaaa....."
ブライトに応じるかのように、黒竜も弱々しい声を上げる。二匹の声は次第に大きくなり、いつしか洞窟いっぱいに響き渡った。そして・・・・・・・
As if in response to Bright, the black dragon lets out a weak sound of its own. The two creatures' voices gradually grow louder, and before we know it the entire cave is echoing. And then.......
フッチ
「・・・・これは・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"....This is........"
ナッシュ
「まずい！また、あの光だ！！」
Nash
"This is bad! It's that light again!!"
フッチ
「ナッシュさん！！待ってください！！！！」
Futch
"Sir Nash!! Please wait!!!!"
あわてて黒竜に仕かけようとしたおれをフッチが制した。そうする内にも光球は洞窟内に充ちてゆくが、先ほどまでとはその様子が異なっていた。光球はおれたちに迫り来るのではなく、黒竜との間の一点に集中を始めたのだ。
Futch holds me back from trying to rush at the black dragon. As he does this the balls of light start to fill the cave, and the situation becomes drastically different from what it was a moment ago. The balls of light aren't looming towards us, instead beginning to converge around the black dragon.
ナッシュ
「光が・・・・・・ ！何だ！？」
Nash
"The light is...... ! The hell!?"
集まった光が作り上げた巨大な光球の中に不思議な光景が浮かんでいた。青い空、緑の大地、奇妙な形の岩山。そのどれもが、どこか見たことの無い不思議な雰囲気をかもし出している。
A mysterious sight floats inside the huge collective ball of light. Blue sky, green earth, unfamiliar mountains. The fact I don't recognize any of these things, gives it a mysterious atmosphere.
そして、彼方に広がる大森林。はるか地平線まで広がる空と大地。その至るところに、楽しげに戯れる竜の姿があった。
There's a forest spreading out into the distance. The sky and the earth can be seen all the way out to the horizon. And in that place, are the happy shapes of playful dragons.
フッチ
「これは・・・もしかして・・・・・ 『翼と鱗の世界』！？・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"This is...could it be..... The World of Wings and Scales!?........"
ナッシュ
「・・・・・・どう言うことなんだ？・・・・」
Nash
"......What's that supposed to be?...."
ブライト
「クァッ！！クァァァッッッッ！！！！」
Bright
"Kua-!! Kuaaa----!!!!"
そこに、すでに黒竜の姿は無かった。光球が弾けた瞬間、その姿も、また消えていたのだ。そして、そのかわりにハンフリー、オウラン、シーナ、そして今まで行方不明だった人々の姿があった。
Too late, the black dragon's form has disappeared into that place. In an instant the lights burst, and the figure disappears. Then in its place, Humphrey, Oulan, Sheena, and the up-til-now missing people reappear.

手負いの獣を・・・・・それも、この世でもっとも手強い獣を目の前にして、背中の剣、グローサー・フルスが、戦うことを要求する。いや、要求と言うより、それは命令に近い。”我を抜き放て。目の前の敵を倒せ”その言葉がおれの心をつかんで離さない。
That wounded monster.....the strongest creature I've ever seen in this world, the sword on my back, Grosser Fluss, demands to fight it. No, rather than demand, it's more like it's ordering me to. "Unsheathe me. Kill the creature before you." Those words claw at my heart.
あの日、あの時から・・・・

Whether these words were intended for the black dragon, or me, I am already unable to comprehend, which is fine with me. As of now, my heart is filled with nothing but the maddening need to kill.

シーナの案内で山道を進む。皆が黙々と歩き、会話が交わされることはない。あのシーナまでが、無言のまま馬を進めている。竜との戦いを前にして、緊張しているのか。
Following Sheena's lead, we make our way up the mountain path. Everyone walks in silence, not exchanging a single word of conversation. Even Sheena remains silent as he leads the horse ahead. We're about to fight a dragon, so maybe it's nervousness.

しばらく行くと、山の中腹の岩場に、ぽっかりと大きな口を開けた洞窟が現れた。
Soon enough, in the rocky mountain wall, a large cave mouth comes into view.

「この中でジョナが消えちまったんだ。気をつけてくれよな、竜にも、妙な光にも。」
Sheena
"Jonah disappeared around here. Be careful guys, there's a dragon here, and weird lights too."
ナッシュ
「ああ、わかってるさ。」
Nash
"Right, I got it."
おれたちは手早く荷を解いて、戦いの準備を整え、作戦を確認した。おれとオウラン、ハンフリーが攻撃、シーナは後衛で援護をする。フッチはさらに後ろで控え、おれたちにアドバイスを送る、と言う作戦だ。
We quickly fix our affairs, getting our battle preparations in order, and confirming tactics. Oulan, Humphrey and I will attack, while Sheena backs us up as the rear guard. Meanwhile, Futch will keep himself further back, and give us tactical advice.

「ブライトは、ここで待ってるんだ。・・・・・・おまえには見せたくないから・・・・」
Futch
"Bright, wait here. ......I don't want you to see this...."
ブライト
「クア・・・・ァァ・・・」
Bright
"KUA....aa..."
これから起ころうとしていることを、察しているのか。ブライトは寂しげに鳴いてフッチの腕から降りると、入口脇の木の根元に、自分からうずくまった。
What happens afterwards, I couldn't have guessed. Bright descends from Futch's arm with a lonely chirp, goes over to the tree roots growing by the entrance, and crouches there alone.
ブライトを振り返りながら歩むフッチの肩を叩いて、おれたちは竜の住む洞窟へと進んだ。
While Futch turns to look back at Bright as he walks, we advance onwards into the dragon's cave.
おれたちは慎重に洞窟を進んだ。洞窟内は、何かの苔が発光しているのかほのかに明るいため、松明を使わないでも進んで行けたが、一歩進むごとに不安感は増していく。狭い洞窟内では戦いには不向きだが、それは相手も同じことだし、外で自由に動き回られてしまっては、こちらが不利になりかねない。
We cautiously advance towards the cave. Inside, there's some sort of faintly glowing moss, enough that we no longer have any need for torches; nonetheless we each begin to feel a growing sense of unease as we move on. A narrow cave like this isn't really suitable for fighting in, something my companions probably agree on - we'd be able to move around freely outside, but in here we've got a huge handicap.
シーナの話によると、もう少し行った先は多少広くなっていて、そこに黒竜が潜んでいるらしい。いや、らしい、と言うのは間違いだ。一歩進むごとに、ヤツの気配、そして唸り声は確実に大きくなっている。
According to Sheena, it should widen a bit once we're farther in, so that's probably where the black dragon's lying in wait. No, wait, let me rephrase that. With every step we take, signs of his presence and the sound of his growls get more and more obvious.
黒竜が近い。顔を見合わせ、呼吸を整えて・・・
The black dragon is close. We exchange glances, catching our breath...
ナッシュ
「なにっ！？」
Nash
"What-!?"
しまった！！やつはとっくにこちらに気づいていたんだ！！！！突然に飛び出して来た黒竜は、おれたちの目の前で炎を吐くべく大きな口を開けた。
Shit!! It knows we're coming!!!! The black dragon suddenly rushes out, opening its jaws wide to spit out a fireball.
ナッシュ
「散れ！！！」
Nash
"Run!!!"
とっさに散らばって、火球を避ける。同時にハンフリー、オウランの二人に素早く目配せして、竜を取り囲む配置をとった。
Everyone disperses immediately, dodging the fireball. At the same time Humphrey and Oulan, exchanging a glance, move to surround the dragon.
ナッシュ
「フッチ！！竜を見て、何か分かることはあるか！？」
Nash
"Futch!! Look at the dragon, are you getting any ideas!?"
フッチ
「・・・・・・・まだ、若い竜みたいです。二歳か、三歳くらいの・・・・・」
Futch
".......It looks like it's still young. Two, maybe three years old....."
ナッシュ
「それで？」
Nash
"And?"
フッチ
「それぐらいになると、もう鱗は固くなってるから、武器の攻撃はほとんど防がれてしまうと思います。」
Futch
"I think around that age, its scales will have hardened, so it's protected from practically all physical attacks."
ナッシュ
「だろうな、それは昨日すでに・・・・ おわっ！！！！」
Nash
"Well yeah, we figured that out yesterday....Woah!!!!"
いきなりおれを狙って、黒竜が尻尾を振りまわして来た。間一髪、後ろに飛び退いたが、尻尾はおれの腕をかすめる。そしておれがひるんだのを見て、竜は突進して来た。
Suddenly, the dragon swings its tail in my direction. I jump out of the way, missing it by a hair's breadth, the tail just grazing my arm. Having seen me flinch, the dragon comes rushing towards me.
ナッシュ
「くそっ！腹ペコのくせして、やる気満々じゃねえか！！みんな！うちあわせ通り行くぞ！！持久戦に持ち込んでも、ここなら昨日みたいに逃げられることはない！！今度こそしとめられるはずだ！！！」
Nash
"Shit-! This thing gets really motivated when it's hungry!! Everybody! Let's do this together!! We're continuing yesterday's fight, but now it's got nowhere to run!! This time we're definitely bringing it down!!!"
ハンフリー
「・・・・・ブレスには、要注意だ。」
Humphrey
".....Watch out for its breath."
フッチ
「まだ若い竜だから、一度使ったら、しばらくは使えないはずです。」
Futch
"Since it's still a young dragon, if it uses that move once, it shouldn't use it again for a while."
ナッシュ
「わかった！！！」
Nash
"Got it!!!"
次のブレスが来る前に、できるだけダメージを与えておきたいものだ。竜の背後を取ったオウランが、すかさず攻撃を仕掛けた。
Before its next breath, I want to damage it as much as possible. Taking the dragon's back, Oulan attacks without delay.

「オラァァァ！！！」
Oulan
"GRAaaa!!!"
オウランの一撃が黒竜の脇腹にまともに入った。いくら全身を硬い鱗で覆われていようとも防御の弱い箇所は確実に存在する。オウランは、そこに正確な打撃を入れていく。たまらず黒竜がオウランに身体を向けると、今度はハンフリーが大剣を振りかざす。
Oulan's attack hits the black dragon's flank dead-on. No matter how much of its body is covered with hard scales, there must still be a weak spot. Oulan is hitting it with precise blows. As the black Dragon turns to fend off Oulan's continuing attacks, Humphrey raises up his longsword.

「ふんっ！！！！」
Humphrey
"Hrn-!!!!"
斬りつけたハンフリーの太刀は、岩さえ砕いてしまいそうな勢いだったがさすがに竜の鱗は強固だったのか、致命傷までは与えられなかった。やはり、持久戦になるのか・・・・？すると竜は、尻尾を激しく振りながら、後ずさりを始めた。
Humphrey swings his longsword with enough force to cut through rock, but as expected the dragon's hard scales prevent it from giving a fatal wound. This is going to be a really long battle, isn't it....? Just as the thought pops into my head, the dragon violently swings its tail, and I begin to back away.
シーナ
「壁を背にするつもりだ！」
Sheena
"Let's get its back to the wall!"
ナッシュ
「昨日の戦いを学習したってことか！？やばいな、同じ手は通用しないぞ！」
Nash
"Didn't you learn from yesterday's fight!? It's dangerous, don't try that move again!"
黒竜は首を左右に振って威嚇しながら、ついに壁を背にして立った。そして正面からおれたちと向かい合うと、身体を反らし、大きく息を吸い込んだ。
The dragon waves its head menacingly from side to side, eventually moving to stand with its back to the wall. With us facing it from the front, it bends its body, and takes a deep breath.
ナッシュ
「まさかっ！？」
Nash
"Don't tell me-!?"
竜が大きく口を開けた瞬間に、灼熱の炎が洞窟内にほとばしった。間一髪・・・・・・・・ 回避が遅れていたら、全身黒こげになっていただろう。
The dragon opens its mouth wide, and an in instant the cave is filled with scorching flames. I got out in the nick of time........ If I'd been late to dodge my entire body would probably have been burned to a crisp.
シーナ
「おいおい、話が違うぞ！！しばらくブレスは使えないんじゃなかったのか！？」
Sheena
"Hey wait a minute, this isn't what you told me!! Wasn't it not supposed to be able to use its breath for a little while!?"
フッチ
「そんな・・・・ そんなはずは無いのに・・・・・」
Futch
"That.... That wasn't what I expected....."
ナッシュ
「ちっ！野良育ちだけあって、普通の竜より口の行儀が悪いってことか！」
Nash
"Tch! It grew up in the wild, of course it's got bad manners compared to a normal dragon!"
シーナ
「軽口言ってる場合かよ！！」
Sheena
"This isn't the time for your wisecracking!!"
ナッシュ
「おまえに言われたくはないぜ・・・・」
Nash
"I don't wanna hear that from you...."
竜が首を巡らせて、順々におれたちを睨めつける仕草には余裕すら感じられる。竜のブレスのせいで洞窟内の温度は上がっていると言うのに、おれは背筋に冷たいものが走るのを感じた。
We can feel the dragon's glare as it turns its head to look at us. Because of its breath the temperature in the cave has risen considerably, and yet I feel a chill run down my spine.
たとえ幼くても、”竜”は確かに、この世界における最強の存在としておれたちの前に立ちはだかっているのだ。
It might be young, but this "dragon" standing before us is most definitely the strongest being in the world.
シーナ
「みんな、下がってくれ！札を使う！！たのむぜぇ・・・・ ジーンさんに、ねだってもらったとっておきなんだからな。昨日、さがしだすのに、どれだけかかったか・・・」
Sheena
"Guys, step back! I'm gonna use a scroll!! I'm counting on this.... I managed to coax Miss Jeane into giving me the most powerful one she's got. You don't know how far I went yesterday, to look for her..."
そう叫んで、シーナが札をかざした。今はそれしか、手が無い。おれたちは、とびすさってシーナが札を起動させるのを待った。
Shouting this, Sheena holds up the scroll. Right now this is all we've got, my hands are tied. We all jump back, waiting for Sheena to activate the scroll.
シーナ
「行くぜぇっ！！」
Sheena
"Here we goo-!!"
オウラン
「チャンスだね！！」
Oulan
"This is our chance!!"
ナッシュ
「待て！！オウラン！！！ヤツはダメージを受けていない！！！！」
Nash
"Wait!! Oulan!!! He's not taking any damage!!!!"
オウラン
「なにっ！？」
Oulan
"What-!?"
黒竜に札の攻撃は効かなかった。剣だけではなく、魔法まで防ぐとは・・・
The black dragon is unaffected by the scroll's attack. Not only swords, but magic too...
黒竜の激しい一撃に、オウランの身体ははじき飛ばされ、彼女はそのまま、洞窟の壁に叩きつけられてしまった。
With a violent blow, the black dragon sends Oulan flying straight into the wall.
シーナ
「オウラン！！！！！」
Sheena
"Oulan!!!!!"
すかさずシーナが駆け寄り、回復用の札を使おうとする。だが、黒竜はそれを見逃さず、二人めがけて突進して来た。
Sheena rushes over without a moment's delay, pulling out a healing scroll. But the black dragon doesn't miss this and comes rushing towards them.

「行かせん！！」
Humphrey
"Stop!!"
とっさに割って入ったハンフリーを見て、黒竜は突進を止めた。こいつはやっかいだな。ヤツめ、戦った相手の技量をしっかりとみきわめてやがる。だが、黒竜が踏みとどまった今が好機だ。
Seeing Humphrey suddenly force his way through, the dragon stops its charge. The thing seems pretty bothered. He looks over his opponent, judging him with disdain. But if the black dragon keeps holding its ground, right now's a good opportunity.
ナッシュ
「目をふさいでろ！！」
Nash
"Close your eyes!!"
ナッシュ
「ハンフリー！！！」
Nash
"Humphrey-!!!"
ハンフリー
「わかっている。」
Humphrey
"Got it."
ナッシュ
「よし！この手でいけるぞ！！」
Nash
"Great! Here goes nothing!!"
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・何かをする気だ。」
Humphrey
"............It's doing something."
ナッシュ
「なんだと！？」
Nash
"What!?"
シーナ
「！！これだ！！！この光に、ジョナは！！！！光にさわるな！！触ると消えちまうぞ！！！！」
Sheena
"!! There!! That light, it's Jonah!!!! She touched the light!! She touched it and disappeared!!!!"
ナッシュ
「なんだとっ！？」
Nash
"What are you-!?"
ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・！！！！！」
Humphrey
"..........!!!!!"
竜の正面で大剣をかざしていたハンフリーが、よけきれずに光球の一つに触れた途端、シーナの言うとおり、その姿が煙のように消えてしまった。
One of those balls of light touches Humphrey, who's standing before the dragon with his longsword raised, and just as Sheena said he disappears like smoke.
フッチ
「ハ・・・・・ハンフリーさん！！！！」
Futch
"S.....Sir Humphrey!!!!"
シーナ
「フッチ！！！！どう言うことだ！！！！なんなんだこの光は！？」
Sheena
"Futch!!!! Say something!!!! What the hell are these lights!?"
フッチ
「こんな力・・・・・ぼくだって・・・・・・」
Futch
"Such power.....even I......."
ナッシュ
「！！シーナ！！！！早くそこから逃げろ！！！！！」
Nash
"!! Sheena!!!! Get away from there, fast!!!!!"
ハンフリーが消え、あわてているうちに、残りの光球群が、まるで意志があるかのように次はシーナとオウラン達へと目がけて移動を始めていた。
In the panic following Humphrey's disappearance, the remaining balls of light have all begun to move towards Sheena and Oulan, as if they have a will of their own.
シーナ
「だめだ！！オウランが、まだ動けない！！！！」
Sheena
"It's no good!! Oulan still can't move!!!!"
ナッシュ
「くそっ！今、行く！！！！」
Nash
"Shit-! Wait, I'm coming!!!!"
しかし、おれがたどりつくより先に光球が二人を包み、その姿を跡形もなく消し去った。
However, the lights wrap around them just before I get there, and they vanish without a trace.
その光球を生み出すのに、どれほどの力を使ったのか。黒竜の動きも、明らかに鈍り、弱っているのがわかった。・・・・・・・・・今ならヤツを仕留められる。グローサー・フルスを振るえば・・・・・
How much power must it take, to create those balls of light. The black dragon's movement has noticeably slowed, I can tell it's grown weak. .........Now might be a good time to take that bastard down. If I use Grosser Fluss.....

「竜騎士しか知らず、竜騎士以外には教えることは許されない竜の急所があります。それを・・・・・ぼくが・・・・・・・・・・ これしか、方法がないから・・・・・」

"Something only dragon knights know, which we are forbidden to teach to outsiders, is where the vital areas of a dragon are. This.....I'll.......... Just this, there's no techniques....."
ナッシュ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・よし！おれがヤツを引きつけるから、そのスキをつくんだ。いいな！？」
Nash
"..............Okay! I'll lure the bastard away, and you grab that chance. Got it!?"
フッチ

ナッシュ
「おっと！そうはいくかっ！！」

"Hup! Let's do this-!!"
黒竜が再び光球を出現させようと集中したところを、すかさず攻撃して、中断させる。何度も同じ手を食うわけにはいかない。そして、黒竜がひるんだその時を見逃さず、おれとフッチは同時にしかけた。
Without a moment's hesitation, I attack the black dragon where it's attempting to make those balls of light again, and break its concentration. It's impossible for me to do that trick very many times. So, in that moment when the black dragon flinches, Futch and I both move at once.
おれがけん制して、フッチが背後から槍で攻撃するが、竜の反撃もはげしい。なんとか、しのいではいるが、フッチは狙いをさだめることがなかなかできずにいる。
As I divert its attention, and Futch strikes his spear at its back, the dragon counters furiously. Somehow staving it off, Futch's determined aim easily enters the wound.
なら・・・・・おれは、ワイヤーを竜の右足に撃ち出し、身をひるがえして、左側にまわりこんで、両足にワイヤーをからめた。
Then.....I shoot a wire at the dragon's right foot, flipping it over, then go around its left side, entangling both feet in the wire.

「フッチ！今だ！！とどめをっ！！！！」
Nash
"Futch! Now!! The finishing blow-!!!!"
フッチ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch

ナッシュ
「フッチ！！！！」

「もう少し・・・・・・ もう少し早く、おまえと出会っていたら・・・・ ・・・・・・・・・・・ごめんよ。これで終わらせるから・・・・」

"Just a little...... If I'd met you, just a little sooner.... ...........I'm sorry. This is the end...."

「！ブ、ブライト！？どうして、ここへ！！！」
Futch
"! B-Bright!? What are you doing here!!!"
洞窟の入り口で待っていたはずのブライトがいつの間にか、おれたちの背後に来ていたのだ。しかし、ブライトは驚くフッチの言葉には応えなかった。ただ黒竜をじっと見つめて、静かに鳴き声をあげた。
Bright, who was supposed to be waiting at the cave entrance, had come in without our noticing. But, Bright doesn't respond to Futch's words. He stares fixedly at the black dragon, letting out a quiet chirp.

「クァァァァァァァァ・・・・・」
Bright
"Kuaaaaaaaa....."
ブライトに応じるかのように、黒竜も弱々しい声を上げる。二匹の声は次第に大きくなり、いつしか洞窟いっぱいに響き渡った。そして・・・・・・・
As if in response to Bright, the black dragon lets out a weak sound of its own. The two creatures' voices gradually grow louder, and before we know it the entire cave is echoing. And then.......
フッチ
「・・・・これは・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"....This is........"
ナッシュ
「まずい！また、あの光だ！！」
Nash
"This is bad! It's that light again!!"
フッチ
「ナッシュさん！！待ってください！！！！」
Futch
"Sir Nash!! Please wait!!!!"
あわてて黒竜に仕かけようとしたおれをフッチが制した。そうする内にも光球は洞窟内に充ちてゆくが、先ほどまでとはその様子が異なっていた。光球はおれたちに迫り来るのではなく、黒竜との間の一点に集中を始めたのだ。
Futch holds me back from trying to rush at the black dragon. As he does this the balls of light start to fill the cave, and the situation becomes drastically different from what it was a moment ago. The balls of light aren't looming towards us, instead beginning to converge around the black dragon.
ナッシュ
「光が・・・・・・ ！何だ！？」
Nash
"The light is...... ! The hell!?"
集まった光が作り上げた巨大な光球の中に不思議な光景が浮かんでいた。青い空、緑の大地、奇妙な形の岩山。そのどれもが、どこか見たことの無い不思議な雰囲気をかもし出している。
A mysterious sight floats inside the huge collective ball of light. Blue sky, green earth, unfamiliar mountains. The fact I don't recognize any of these things, gives it a mysterious atmosphere.
そして、彼方に広がる大森林。はるか地平線まで広がる空と大地。その至るところに、楽しげに戯れる竜の姿があった。
There's a forest spreading out into the distance. The sky and the earth can be seen all the way out to the horizon. And in that place, are the happy shapes of playful dragons.
