Suikogaiden 2 Chapter 1 - The Champion

おれたちが中央の広場に駆けつけると、辺りは無惨に焼き払われていた。
When we rushed to the main square, the area had tragically been reduced to ashes.

そして焼けただれた地面の上で、雑魚をかたづけた山賊三人組が早くも盗賊団と対峙していた。相手は十人はいるだろうか、それぞれに武器を構えている。
Standing on that hideously charred ground, the three mountain bandits had apparently finished off the small fry and were already facing off against the invading bandit gang. I could count about ten opponents, each readying weapons of their own.

その中央に、盗賊の首領らしき男が立っていた。
A man who looked to be the leader of the bandits was standing in the center of the square.



ナッシュ
「ついにボスのお出ましか。」
Nash
"So their leader has finally shown himself."

おれたちが中央の広場に駆けつけると、辺りは無惨に焼き払われていた。

そして焼けただれた地面の上で、雑魚をかたづけた騎士二人が早くも盗賊団と対峙していた。相手は十人はいるだろうか、それぞれに武器を構えている。

その中央に、盗賊の首領らしき男が立っていた。
A man who looked to be the leader of the bandits was standing in the center of the square.



ナッシュ
「ついにボスのお出ましか。」
Nash
"So their leader has finally shown himself."

首領は動じることもなく、広場に集まったおれたちを一瞥して、口を開いた。
The leader stood unmoved, and glancing to see us assembled in the square, he opened his mouth to speak.

首領
「ほほう、これは驚いた。/f軍の面々が、こんな辺ぴな村にいたとはな。道理で部下たちが手こずるわけだ。」
Leader
"Hohoh, this is surprising. All you people from the Dunan Army, in a remote village like this. It's no wonder my subordinates had so much trouble."



マイクロトフ
「われわれを知っているのなら、話は早い。この村から、さっさと出て失せろ。そして盗賊団を解散し、二度と悪さをするな。」
Miklotov
"If you know us, then let me make this quick. Leave this village immediately, and get out of my sight. Then dissolve your band of thieves, and never again cause mischief such as this."



首領
「ここはグラスランド、自由の大地だ。生き方に誰の指図も受けん。」
Leader
"This is the Grasslands, it's a free land. Who could possibly give us instructions on how we live our lives."



カミュー
「これはこれは。言う事だけは立派ですね。」
Camus
"I'll say this. At least your speech is elegant."



首領
「では、あくまでわれらと戦うと言うのだな？」
Leader
"Then, are you saying we shall fight to the bitter end?"



ギジム
「おうさ！てめえらみてえな卑劣な盗賊団を、おめおめと、のさばらせておけるかい！」
Gijimu
"Hey! You bastards're cowardly robbers, acting like this doesn't have anything to do with you, d'you really think you c'n do whatever you want!"



首領
「くくくくくっ。われわれを”卑劣”とは、これは面白い事を言う。では、/f軍がやったことは、卑劣ではなかったと言うのかな？」
Leader
"Heheheheheh. Calling us "cowardly," that's an amusing thing to say. Then, what the Dunan Army has done, couldn't that be called cowardly as well?"



マイクロトフ
「なんだとっ！！！！！！！」
Miklotov
"What did you say-!!!!!!!"



ギジム
「バカ言ってんじゃねぇ、おれたちが何をしたって言うんでぇ！！！」
Gijimu
"That's crazy talk ain't it, what're you sayin' we did!!!"



首領
「口先だけの理想を語り、その裏で非道を行う卑怯者どもなど、われら『炎の運び手』が恐れるはずがあろうか！！」
Leader
"Preaching insincere ideals, while committing atrocities behind the scenes like the cowards you are, do you expect us Fire Bringers to fear you!!"

ナッシュ
「まずい！！」
Nash
"This is bad!!"



マイクロトフ
「ひるむな！円陣を組むんだ！」
Miklotov
"Don't falter! They're circling us!"

背中合わせになって、盗賊たちの攻撃を防ぐ。カミューとマイクロトフも、山賊たちも腕は確かだ、円陣が崩れることはないだろうが・・・・
We find ourselves standing back to back, defending from the bandits' offensive. Camus, Miklotov, and the mountain bandits' strength is certain, but I don't know if we can break this circle....



ナッシュ
「まずいっ！！」
Nash
"This is really bad-!!"

首領
「紅蓮の炎よ！！わが敵を焼き尽くせ！！」
Leader
"Crimson flames!! Burn my enemies to ashes!!"

ナッシュ
「しまった！！！！！」
Nash
"Damn it!!!!!"



直後、背後に巨大な火柱が上がった。おそらくは、脅しのためにわざと外したのだろう。この魔法が、二度も村に上がった火柱の正体だ。
Immediately, a huge pillar of fire rose up behind me. I get the feeling that in defending ourselves from immediate threat, we've left out something bigger. The true face behind this magic, which has twice now made pillars of flame rise up in the village.

ナッシュ
「くそ！こいつら！！！」
Nash
"Shit! These guys!!!"

おれは、一瞬のすきを見て盗賊たちの包囲網から抜け出し、周囲の目を巧みにかわしながら、首領へと近づいて行った。
As soon as I found a gap I slipped out of the bandits' circle, and keeping out of sight of surrounding eyes, drew close to the leader.



首領
「ふん！こしゃくな真似を！！」
Leader
"Hmph! Such impudent behavior!!"

ナッシュ
「剣も出来るとはさすがだな。魔法だけじゃないってことか。」
Nash
"I expect you can use a sword. Magic can't be all you've got."

首領
「当然であろう。それでなければ、この過酷な土地で名を広めることなど出来ん。」
Leader
"Of course I can. If I couldn't do that much, it would have been rather difficult to spread my name across this harsh land."

お返しとばかりに首領が剣を振り、おれは短剣で受け止める。お互いの刃が火花を散らした瞬間、おれは空いた手の袖口からスパイクを撃ち放った。
He accompanied his retort with a swing of his sword, which I fended off with my short sword. The moment our swords came together with a scattering of sparks, I shot a spike out of the sleeve of my free hand.



首領
「ぐあっ！！」
Leader
"Guah!!"

ナッシュ
「もらった！！」
Nash
"Gotcha!!"



盗賊
「お頭！今のうちに退いてください！！」
Bandits
"Boss! Please get away from there now!!"

部下たちの邪魔が入り、とどめをさしそこなった。まずいぞ・・・・また・・・・・・
His subordinates start to intrude on our fight, killing my chances of pulling a finishing blow. This is bad luck....again......



首領
「『炎の運び手』の従者たちよ！わが炎にその身をゆだねよ！！さすれば、炎はそなたの力となるであろう！！」
Leader
"Followers of the Fire Bringer! We will entrust these body to our flames!! If we do so, then these flames may gain their power!!"

首領が叫ぶと同時に盗賊たちは一斉に退き、それぞれが腰に下げた革袋から小さなお札を取り出していた。
The bandits all moved at once at their leader's shout, each of them pulling small scrolls from the leather bags hanging at their waists.

ナッシュ
「まさか！？」
Nash
"It can't be!?"

おれは盗賊たちが持つお札に見覚えがあった。『守りの天蓋（てんがい）の札』だ。グリンヒルで使っていたものより小さいのは、おそらく効果範囲がせまいものなのだろう。つまり、全体防御とまではいかないが、使用者の身一つくらいなら守れると言うことだ。となると・・・・・・・・・・
The scrolls in the bandits' hands were familiar to me. Canopy Defense. Smaller than what was used back in Greenhill, they would most likely have a narrower range of effect. In other words, they wouldn't be able to cover the whole team, but they'd protect the immediate area around the user. Which means..........

ナッシュ
「やばい！！！高レベルの魔法を使うつもりだ！！！！！」
Nash
"Crap!!! He's planning to use high-level magic!!!!!"



ギジム
「なんだとっ！！！！」
Gijimu
"What'd you say-!!!!"



カミュー
「これは・・・・・・」
Camus
"This is......"

ナッシュ
「そう言えば、おれも、お札を・・・・・」
「みんな！逃げるんだ！！」
Nash
> "Come to think of it, I've got a scroll I could....." (LP +1, Popularity -1)
> "Everybody! Run!!" (Popularity +1)



おれは、昼間に市を回った時に買っておいたお札を取り出し、意識を集中させた。
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・って、あれ？お札が起動しない！！すでに首領の手の甲は、赤い光を帯び始めていると言うのに・・・・・・
I took out the scroll I'd bought for the hell of it during the fair, and began to concentrate.
......................
................Wait, what? The scroll isn't activating!! And the back of the boss' hand is already glowing with a red light......



マイクロトフ
「どうなされたのです！？早くお札を！！！！」
Miklotov
"What in the world are you doing!? Hurry and use the scroll!!!!"

ナッシュ
「わ、わかってる！！」
Nash
"I-I know!!"



もう一度お札に意識を集中させ、発動を試みたが、何かがおかしい。このお札からは、それらしい気が感じられないのだ。おれは、あわてて、お札を確認した。
I concentrate one more time, trying to invoke the spell, but something's weird. I can't sense anything from the scroll. Confused, I checked to make sure it was really a scroll.

ナッシュ
「んなっ？？？？？？」
Nash
"The hell-??????"

よく見ると、『守りの天蓋の札』とは少しばかり模様が違っていた。ほんの・・・・・・・ほんの少し・・・・・だったが・・・・・・・・
Looking more closely, the design on this Canopy Defense scroll was slightly different from normal. Just.......just a little.....but........

ナッシュ
「くっ・・・安物買いは・・・・」
Nash
"Guh...no wonder it was so cheap...."



コウユウ
「銭失いって、奴ですかい？」
Koyu
"Didja lose money on that thing?"

ギジム
「ちぃっ！！あと一歩ってところだったのによ！！！！」
Gijimu
"Tch-!! We're not in a really good spot right now!!!!"



マイクロトフ
「敵に後ろを見せるなど！！」
Miklotov
"You can't be planning to turn your backs on the enemy!!"

ナッシュ
「よせ！！無駄死には、騎士の本懐じゃないだろ！？」
Nash
"This is our last chance!! Dying in vain isn't a knight's dream is it!?"



直後に首領が発動させた魔法によって、おれたちと盗賊団との間に、灼熱の火球が発生した。火球は不気味な轟音と共に徐々に膨らみ、色も明るく変色していく。
Immediately after the leader invoked his spell, with us still in the robber gang, a red-hot fireball appeared. The fireball gradually swelled with an ominous roar, its color brightly changing.

ナッシュ
「この魔法はやばいぞっ！！！！」
Nash
"This is some really dangerous magic-!!!!"

火球は手始めに盗賊たちを飲み込んだが、その手に持っていたお札のおかげで、平気な顔をしている。だが、魔法を防ぐ術がないおれたちには、もはや逃げるしか道はなかった。
The fireball swallows up the bandits first, but thanks to the scrolls in their hands, they all keep calm. But without any magic to defend ourselves, there's no longer any route of escape.

ナッシュ
「分散しよう！！早く逃げるんだ！！」
Nash
"Scatter!! Hurry and run!!"



コウユウ、ロウエンが、まず広場の左に駆けだし、広場の右にギジムとマイクロトフ。おれとカミューは、真っ直ぐに広場を駆け抜けた。その間にも火球は膨らむ速度を増し、今や完全に広場を包み、駆け去るおれの背に熱気が襲いかかって来る。
Koyu and Lo wen first go left out of the square, with Gijimu and Miklotov going right. Camus and I ran straight on through the square. During that time the fireball expanded even faster, filling the entire square, searing my back with heat.

ナッシュ
「くそっ！いったいどこまで広がるんだ！？」
Nash
"Dammit-! Exactly how far's it gonna spread!?"

？？？？
「きゃぁぁぁっ！！！」
????
"Kyaaah!!!"

ナッシュ
「！？」
Nash
"!?"



路地に女性が倒れていた。！！あれは、さっきの・・・・
A woman had fallen in the alley. !! That's the girl from....

ナッシュ
「今行くっ！！！！」
Nash
"I'm coming-!!!!"

おれは、すかさず方向転換して、女性の元に駆け寄ろうとしたが、カミューの方が早かった。
I changed course without a moment's delay, rushing towards the woman, with Camus close behind.



カミュー
「！マキ？」
Camus
"! Maki?"

マキ
「カミュー！？」
Maki
"Camus!?"

だが、抱き起こされた女性は一瞬、苦痛に顔をゆがめる。
But the moment he tried to help her up, pain distorted her face.

マキ
「カミュー！わたしはいいから、早く逃げて！！」
Maki
"Camus! I'm fine, hurry and run!!"

カミュー
「何を言うんです？わたしが君を放って逃げるような男でないことは、よく知っているはずですよ。」
Camus
"What are you saying? I'm not the kind of man to leave you here and run, you should know that."

火球がすぐそこまで迫って来ている。このままでは、おれも二人も、勢いの増す火球に飲み込まれてしまうだろう。何か方法は無いのか！？・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・そうだ！！まだ、手はある！！！！おれは路地に倒れている盗賊に駆け寄ると、急いで腰の革袋を探った。
The fireball is approaching fast. The way things are going, I'm probably going to get swallowed up by that ever-more-powerful fireball along with those two. Isn't there anything I can do!? ...................That's it!! I've still got a way!!!! I rush over to one of the fallen bandits in the alleyway, hurriedly fumbling through the leather bag on his waist.

ナッシュ
「あった！！！！」
Nash
"Got it!!!!"

思ったとおり、革袋の中にお札が入っていた。
Just as I thought, there was a scroll in the bag.

ナッシュ
「カミュー！！これを使え！！」
Nash
"Camus!! Use this!!"

お札をカミューに投げる。だが、まだ足りない。おれたちが身を守るには、少なくとも三枚は必要なのだ。しかし、他の盗賊の腰袋には、お札は入っていなかった。
I throw the scroll to Camus. It's still not enough. In order to defend ourselves, we'll need three scrolls at least. But, none of the other bandits lying scattered in the alleyway had a scroll in their bags.

ナッシュ
「くそっ！！！！全員持っておけよ！！！！！」
Nash
"Shit-!!!! You're supposed to give them to your whole team!!!!!"



カミュー
「一枚あれば、充分・・・・」
Camus
"If there is one, that is sufficient...."

ナッシュ
「だめだ！！それじゃあ、二人は守れない！！！」
Nash
"No way!! In that case, there's two people going unprotected!!!"

おれがやっとお札を見つけた時にはすでに遅かった。火球が一気に膨張し、カミューとマキは炎に飲み込まれた。
When I finally got my hands on more scrolls it was already too late. The fireball swallowed up Camus and Maki in one great blaze.



ナッシュ
「！！！！」
Nash
"!!!!"

首領
「ははははははははっっ！！！われら『炎の運び手』に逆らう者は、皆、業火に焼き尽くされるのだ！！！！今夜、再びこの村に来るぞ！！！今後はおとなしく、われらに従え！！！！」
Leader
"Hahahahahahahahahh!! Those who go against the Fire Bringers will all be burned to nothing in the flames of hell!!!! Tonight, we will come to this village once more!!! From now on, you will quietly abide by our rules!!!!"

炎に渦まく轟音の中、首領の声だけが、やけにはっきりと響きわたっていた・・・・・・・
From within the roaring maelstrom of fire, only the leader's awful resounding voice could be clearly heard.......
