Suikogaiden 2 Chapter 1 - The Champion

おれたちは部屋に戻ると、沈痛な表情のまま、口を閉ざした。村人たちの様子だと、/f軍が、ここで略奪を行ったと言う事実は確かなのだろう。それが、彼らにとってどう言う意味を持つのか・・・
When we returned to the room, everyone was in a grave mood, not a word being spoken between us. With the state the villagers were in, it seemed there was some truth to what they said about the Dunan army having come and plundered the place. And so they asked themselves what meaning those words held...



ボルガン
「避難させていた村人から、聞いていたよ。その話を聞いた時、ボルガン、少し悲しくなったよ。」
Bolgan
"While the villagers were taking shelter, they told me. When Bolgan heard it, I was a little sad."



ギジム
「しかし、いったいどこのどいつが？略奪だなんて・・・おれたちゃあ山賊だがぁスジのとおらねぇことはしねぇぜ。」
Gijimu
"But, who the hell was it? Lootin' like that...I dunno any of my bandits that'd have the guts t'pull that off."

ナッシュ
「でも、まぁ・・・・略奪があってそれをやったのが、/f軍。少なくとも、その名を持った奴らだってことは確かだ。この辺りは、グラスランドとは言えマチルダ騎士団がその秩序を保っていたんだ。それを、あんたら・・・いや、/f軍がやぶった。そのドサクサに、一儲けをたくらんだ奴らがいたってこと・・・になるかな。」
Nash
"But, well....the ones who did the looting were from the Dunan army. At the very least, we can be sure that's the name they used. This area called the Grasslands was under the protection of the Matilda Knights. Then, you all...no, the Dunan Army defeated them. In the confusion, a lot of guys with money-making schemes...may have come up."



マイクロトフ
「で、では・・・・われわれの戦いが・・・・・この村で、悲劇を生んでいた・・・・そう言うことか？」
Miklotov
"T-then....our battle.....gave birth to the tragedy in this village....Is that what you're saying?"



カミュー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Camus
"..............."



アイリ
「そ・・・・そんな・・・・・わたしたちの・・・・あいつの目指したものの結果が・・・・」
Eilie
"T....that can't be right.....Our....The result of his goal was...."



リィナ
「アイリ・・・・・・・・・全てのものごとには、良いところと、悪いところがあるわ。あの戦いもそう・・・・・・・良いところがあって・・・・・・・この村では、その悪いところが・・・・・そう言うことよ・・・・・・」
Rina
"Eilie........All things have good spots, and bad ones too. That struggle as well.......met with good results.......So this village was one of the bad results.....of that......"



ボルガン
「ぐす・・・・・・・・・」
Bolgan
"Sniff........."



ギジム
「それで・・・・・・・どうすんだ？出て行けって言われて、出て行くのかい？」
Gijimu
"So then.......What d'we do now? They told us t'get out, so do we leave?"



リィナ
「あの村長・・・・・妙なことを言ってたわね・・・・余計な事をしたせいで、とかなんとか・・・いったい、どう言う意味かしら？」
Rina
"That village head.....He said something rather strange....about unnecessary effort, or something like that...What do you think he could have meant?"

ナッシュ
「なるほど・・・そう言うことか？」
Nash
"I see...so that's how it is, huh?"



マキ
「えぇ・・・・・・・・」
Maki
"Yes........"



アイリ
「なに？どう言うこと？」
Eilie
"What? How what is?"

マキ
「えぇ・・・・クラドさまは・・・・あの盗賊たちの言いなりで、貢ぎ物をわたすつもりだったみたいで・・・だけど、その前に皆さんと盗賊たちの戦いになって・・・・・・」
Maki
"That's right....Lord Clado is....It seems he is planning to pay the bandits tribute, just as they want him to...But before he could, that fight happened between everyone and the bandits......"



マイクロトフ
「では・・・・先ほどの戦いも・・・・・」
Miklotov
"So then....the earlier battle as well....."



ギジム
「なんでぇ、なんでぇ、何言ってやがんでぇ！！そんなの、盗賊どもの常套手段！！！！貢ぎ物を出せば、見逃してもらえるだぁ？？？バカ言っちゃいけねぇよ！！奴ら、自分たちでお宝探す手間をはぶきたいだけよ！！！」
Gijimu
"Whaat, whaat, what're you talkin' about!! So that sorta thing's what those no-good robbers usually do!!!! Givin' tribute, are you just overlookin' the whole thing an' givin' it to 'em??? You gotta be kiddin' me!! Those guys just wanna save time lookin' for the treasure themselves!!!"



ロウエン
「だろうねぇ。」
Lo Wen
"Seems that way."



マキ
「じゃ、じゃあ・・・・・貢ぎ物をわたしても・・・・・・・・・」
Maki
"T-then.....If I take the tribute........."



リィナ
「いっしょ・・・・ってことね・・・・・・」
Rina
"Going....together, hm......"

マキ
「そんな・・・・・・それじゃあ、どうしたってこのミリトの村は・・・」
Maki
"You can't......If we do that, no matter what the village of Milit will..."

ナッシュ
「そうでもないさ。幼なじみの騎士に、その相棒、男気あふれる山賊たちに、優しい旅芸人の一行までいる。盗賊団の一つや、二つ・・・叩きつぶせるさ。」
Nash
"That definitely won't happen. Not when you've got your childhood friend the knight and his partner, these bandits overflowing with chivalry, and these kind traveling entertainers to go with you. Whether there's one gang of thieves, or two...We'll smash them into mincemeat."



ギジム
「そうともよ！」
Gijimu
"Damn straight!"



アイリ
「そう・・・そうだよね。何言われても、正しいと思ったらそれをやるって・・・・そう教えられたからね。」
Eilie
"Yeah...that's right. No matter what they say, we should do what we think is right....Looks like we'll be able to teach them that."



リィナ
「いろいろと、言われるのはなれてますし。」
Rina
"With so many voices together, what we say may come true."



マイクロトフ
「この地で・・・不名誉なことが起こったのが確かなら・・・・・・汚名をはらす・・・・その機会ですね。」
Miklotov
"On this land...though disgraceful situations may have certainly arisen......we will dispel this infamy....This is our chance."



ギジム
「よおし、善は急げだ！おれたちはさっそく、やつらの偵察に行って来る。その間に、あんたらは作戦を立てといてくれ。」
Gijimu
"Aawwright, let's strike while the iron's hot! Us guys'll start scoutin' out the enemy immediately. When the time comes, I'll leave you guys t'take care of the tactics."

ナッシュ
「気をつけてくれよ。相手は並の盗賊団じゃないんだ。」
Nash
"Be careful. Our enemy isn't your average band of thieves."



コウユウ
「心配は無用でさぁ！山歩きなら、こっちがベテラン。おいらたちの右に出るヤツはいねえよ！！」
Koyu
"Your worry's unnecessary! Yours truly is a veteran when it comes to mountain-walking. There's nobody superior to us guys!!"



威勢のいい言葉を残して、山賊三人組が部屋を出て行く。
The bandit trio exited the room, leaving those cheerful words behind.



リィナ
「わたしたちは、どうしましょうか？」
Rina
"What should we do, then?"

ナッシュ
「そうだな。北の森の近くで、何か出し物をやって村人を集めておいてくれるとありがたい。あそこなら、何かあった時すぐに森に逃げ込めるからな。」
Nash
"I got you. If you could find some way to gather everyone near the forest to the north, that'd be a big help. If they're over there, then if anything happens they'll be able to take refuge in the woods immediately."

リィナ
「ふふ、人を集めるのは、わたしたちのお仕事ですからね。」
Rina
"Heheh, gathering people is our job, after all."



マイクロトフ
「われわれは？」
Miklotov
"And us?"

ナッシュ
「本番の戦いまで休んでおいてくれ。剣の腕前がモノを言うのは、奴らがやって来てからだからな。」
Nash
"You should rest before taking part in the battle. Your powerful sword skills will be helpful when those guys show up, y'know."

それぞれに役目を割り当てたが、おれは、どうするかな？
Now that everyone's got their assigned roles, what should I do?

マキの様子を見る
村の様子を見ておく
> See how Maki's doing
> Check up on the village

マキの様子を見てみることにする。ずいぶんとショックをうけていたみたいだし・・・・それに、おれたちがやろうとしていることを、クラドの耳に入れてしまう懸念もあった。
I go to see how Maki's doing. She looked like she'd had a pretty bad shock bad there....Plus, there's the worry that Clado might hear of what we're all planning to do.

ナッシュ
「足の傷はもういいのかい？」
Nash
"Are you okay with that injury on your leg?"



マキ
「ご心配をかけてもうしわけありません。おかげさまで、もう大丈夫みたいです。それに、みなさんが働いているのにわたしが休んでいるわけにもいきませんから。」
Maki
"Thank you very much for worrying about me. Thanks to you, it seems fine. Besides, everyone else is working so hard it would be inexcusable if I rested instead of putting in my share."

ナッシュ
「それで・・・その斧は？」
Nash
"Is...that what the axe is for?"

マキ
「えぇ、薪がきれてしまったので。これじゃあ、カミューにお茶の一杯もいれてあげられませんし。」
Maki
"Yes, I'm splitting firewood. Without this, I wouldn't be able to even give Camus a cup of tea."

ナッシュ
「そう言うことなら、まかせてくれよ。それより、あんたは休んでいな。こんなところ見られたら、あの熱血騎士に何を言われるか、わからないからな。」
Nash
"If you're gonna put it like that, how about you let me handle it. Besides, you're resting. That hot-blooded knight's gonna have a word or three to say to you if he catches you in a place like this, I bet."

マキ
「あ・・・・いえ、そんな。わたしが・・・・・・」
Maki
"Ah....no, he wouldn't. I......"

おれはマキから斧を受け取り、彼女を家に戻した。ここなら、彼女が外へ出ようとしてもすぐにわかる。
I take the axe from Maki, and send her back inside the house. In this place, if she even steps outside we'll know right away.



カミュー
「しかし・・・・・・/f軍が略奪を・・・・・・・・・・・なぁ、マイクロトフ・・・おれたちがマチルダ騎士団への忠誠を捨てたことは正しかったのだろうか・・・・・」
Camus
"But......for the Dunan army to loot...........Hey, Miklotov...I wonder if casting aside our allegiance to the Matilda Knights was really the right thing to do....."

マイクロトフ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Miklotov
".............."

カミュー
「あの時、騎士の証を・・・・・」
Camus
"That time, our knight emblems were....."



マイクロトフ
「なぁ、カミュー。おれたちが、マチルダ騎士団の入団試験を受けた時のこと、おぼえているか？」
Miklotov
"Hey, Camus. Do you still remember the time we were sitting for the Matilda Knights' enrollment examinations?"

カミュー
「？もちろんさ、あんなにガチガチに緊張した男を見たのはあれが初めてだったよ。」
Camus
"? Of course, it was my first time seeing a man so nervous his teeth were chattering."



マイクロトフ
「茶化すな。おれにとっては夢がかなうかどうかの正念場だったんだからな。」
Miklotov
"Don't make fun of me. For me that was the critical moment where I could finally turn my dreams into reality."

カミュー
「ははは、おまえはいつでも真剣に考えすぎさ。入団試験は一回かぎりってわけじゃないってのに。」
Camus
"Hahaha, you always did overthink things with that seriousness of yours. The enrollment examinations didn't prohibit multiple tries, you know."

マイクロトフ
「何を言う。失敗したら、翌年まで待たなきゃいけないんだぞ。」
Miklotov
"What are you saying? If I failed, I'd be forced to wait until the next year."

カミュー
「まぁ、わたしも自由騎士連合の推薦状をもらって来たんだ。失敗できないのは、同じことだったけどな。」
Camus
"Well, I came with a letter of recommendation from the Free Knights' Order myself. So I was in the same position, not being allowed to fail."



カミュー
「しかも、模擬戦の相手が気合十分でずいぶんと手こずったもんさ。剣技をみるだけだから、適当なところで切り上げればいいものを、勝ちにこだわって・・・・」
Camus
"But, my opponent in the mock battle had so much fighting spirit I really had quite a hard time. Since they were only watching swordsmanship, you were fixated on the win, thinking that if only you could find a proper way to finish it then things would be fine...."

マイクロトフ
「それは、おまえもだろう？誰のせいで、入団試験模擬戦の最長記録を作ることになったと思うんだ？審判もいいかげん、あきれていたぞ。」
Miklotov
"The same goes for you, doesn't it? Whose fault do you think it was that we broke the record for the longest mock battle in the enrollment examinations? Even the judges were quite amazed, you know."

カミュー
「それはこっちの台詞さ。しかし・・・・・あのころのわたしたちはずいぶんとガムシャラだったのかもしれんな。」
Camus
"That's my line. But.....we may have been incredibly reckless in those days."



マイクロトフ
「たしかにな・・・・・あの頃は、もっと世界が単純に見えていたさ。善行と悪行。価値観としては、それで十分だった。」
Miklotov
"We sure were.....The world seemed like a much simpler place back then. Good deeds and bad ones. For our sense of values, that was all we needed."

カミュー
「たしかにな・・・・・・・でも、それも変わってしまった。騎士の証を投げ捨てたあの日・・・・そうまでして戦った結果が・・・マキの村を・・・・・・」
Camus
"It really was.......But, that has changed as well. The day we threw away our knights' emblems....The result of our battle was already decided...For Maki's village to......"

マイクロトフ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・くだらぬことを。」
Miklotov
".............That's a foolish thing to say."

カミュー
「なに？」
Camus
"What?"

マイクロトフ
「わが胸には、騎士の証はなくとも騎士の誇りは残っている。物事には良いところと悪いところがある。リィナさんの言うとおりさ。なら、おれはできうるかぎり良い所がふえるように生きるだけだ。」
Miklotov
"I may no longer have a knight's emblem on my chest, but I still have a knight's pride within it. There are good and places in everything. Those are Miss Rina's words. That being the case, I will live on in order to make sure the good places multiply as much as possible."

カミュー
「ふ・・・・・・・おまえは・・・・単純でいいな。」
Camus
"Heh.......You....really are wonderfully simple."

マイクロトフ
「わるかったな。」
Miklotov
"Sorry for that."



マキ
「あのぉ・・・・ナッシュさん？終わりましたか？」
Maki
"Umm....Mister Nash? Have you finished?"

ナッシュ
「え？」
Nash
"Eh?"



マキ
「あ・・・・・・・・・カミューたちの話を盗み聞きしてましたね。」
Maki
"Oh.........You were eavesdropping on their conversation weren't you."

ナッシュ
「え、あ、いや。す、すぐに薪を作るから待っててくれ。」
Nash
"Er, ah, well. J-just wait a minute, I'll finish making this firewood in a flash."

『炎の運び手』との再戦にそなえて、おれは下見のために村に出た。しかしひどい有様だ。
While preparing for our rematch with the Fire Bringers, I go out to the village for a preliminary inspection. It's in pretty horrible condition though.



リィナ
「あら、ナッシュさん。どうしたんです？」
Rina
"Oh, Mister Nash. What's the matter?"

ナッシュ
「いや、村の様子を見ておこうと思って・・・・・・・」
Nash
"Er, I just thought I'd see how the village was doing......."



リィナ
「あら、ではわたしの顔でも見に来ました？ふふ。」
Rina
"Oh, so you didn't just come by to see my face? Heheh."

ナッシュ
「え？あ、いや・・・・・・・・・」
Nash
"Eh? Ah, well........."

リィナ
「残念なこと。アイリの方がお気に入りかしら？」
Rina
"It's a disappointment. I wonder if Eilie's the favorite?"

ナッシュ
「アイリか、元気な良い娘だな。おれの妹もあれぐらい元気ならよかったんだが・・・」
Nash
"Eilie's a really cheerful, friendly girl. It'd be great if my little sister could be that upbeat..."

リィナ
「あら、妹さんがいらっしゃるんですか。とても、そんなふうには見えませんでしたよ。」
Rina
"Oh, so you have a little sister. You really don't look like the type."

ナッシュ
「もう、何年も会ってないからな。」
Nash
"Well, we haven't seen each other in many years now."

リィナ
「なにがあったんですか？」
Rina
"What happened?"

ナッシュ
「いろいろとね・・・・・・・ユーリがアイリぐらい元気だったら・・・・」
Nash
"It's a long story.......If Julie was as spirited as Eilie...."

リィナ
「あら、あの娘だってずっとあんな笑顔で生きて来れたわけじゃないんですよ。」
Rina
"Oh, that girl wasn't always living with a smile like that you know."

リィナは、そう言って微笑むと自分たちの身の上を話し始めた。
With those words, Rina began with a smiling face to tell their story.

新しい街につき、広場で人を集めては劇といくつかの芸の出し物を見せる。大人たちも子供たちも、目をかがやかせてわたしたちの芸を見てくれた。
At each new city, people would gather in the square to watch a few performances. Whether they were young and old, their eyes would shine at the sight of our show.

出し物の間に、街の子供たちと仲良くなることもあった。その時には、わたしたちの練習中の芸を見せたりもした。幼稚な芸だったけど、それでも喜んでくれたわ。
During our performance, we'd be able to make friends with the children of the town. At those times, they'd come to watch even when we were practicing.

でも、日が暮れる頃にはみんな家へと帰って行ったし、その子の親たちがそんな姿を見つけたなら青い顔をして子供を連れかえったり、わたしたちが追い返されたりした。
But, at the end of the day everyone would go back to their homes, those childrens' parents would come to take their children home, and we'd be turned away as well.

ばかな話よね。”子供を連れ去って芸を仕込む”なんて噂がどこにでもあった。
It was some rather silly talk. The rumor that "They're kidnapping our children to teach them to perform" could be found in all sorts of places.

だけど、わたしたちも子供だったから、”自分たちも連れて来られた子供”なんだって思ってたこともあった。
But, since we were children as well, I couldn't help but think "Maybe we were brought from somewhere too."

ある日、父親にきいたことがあった。「わたしたちはどこから連れて来られたの？」って・・・その時の父のさびしげな顔を・・・・今ではその意味をわかることができる・・・・
Then one day, I asked my father. "Where did you get us from?"...That time a wistful look came onto his face....Now I'm able to understand what the meaning of that look was....

わたしたち旅芸人一家の暮らしは旅から旅の毎日で、物心ついた頃からその生活だったから、わたしもアイリも故郷なんて言葉に実感を持つことはできなかった。
As a family of traveling entertainers we would be traveling every day, and since we had been living this life since we were old enough to recognize the world around us, Eilie and I never knew what it meant to have a home.

それでもわたしたちはそれなりに満足な幸せにつつまれていた。わたし、アイリ、父と母、古ぼけた馬車とロバ、それがわたしたちの家族だったんです。
Even so, we were able to find a sort of happiness. Me, Eilie, Father and Mother, our worn-out donkey cart, those were all the members of our family.

アイリは父にナイフ投げの芸を習い、わたしは母にカード占いを習いました。父の「いつ、おまえたちだけになっても生きていけるように」なんて冗談とも本気ともつかない言葉を聞きながら・・・・・・・
Eilie learned knife-throwing from Father, and I learned fortune-telling from Mother. We could never tell if Father was joking or being serious when he'd tell us it was "in case you ever have to live on your own."

いえ、冗談だと思っていたわ。あの日が来るまでは・・・・・
No, I really thought it was a joke. Until that day.....



盗賊団の襲撃・・・・・・・・・あんな何もない馬車を襲ったって、何もありはしないのに・・・
We were raided by a band of thieves.........They attacked our empty cart, but there was nothing there...

父に押し込められた馬車の隠し扉から外に出た時には全てが終わっていました。わたしとアイリは、そこで泣きつづけ・・・・・三日目の朝になってやっと、二人だけで生きていかなければならなくなったことを知ったの・・・・
Father locked us in a secret compartment of the cart, and by the time we made it out everything was already over. Eilie and I cried there for a long time.....When the third day came to pass, the two of us finally understood that we'd been forced to live on our own....

運良く、すぐに小さな村にたどり着き、そこでわたしたちは、あたたかな食事を恵んでもらい、何日かの宿を得た・・・・
Luckily, we managed to quickly make it to a small village, where we were given warm meals to eat, and a place to stay for several days....

でも、ずっとそんな風には生きていけないってことをわたしたちは知っていたから、その村のすみっこで芸を見せて暮らし始めたの・・・・・・・
But, we knew we couldn't live like that forever, and so we began making a living with our performances in a corner of the village.......



まだ今みたいに、あちこちの街をまわってなんてできなかったから、一つの街のあの街路、向こうの広場、そこかしこで芸をして見せる。
It wasn't like it is today, since we didn't go back and forth between different villages; on the road of that one town, opposite the town square, we would show off our skills here and there.

そうやって小さな街の中で場所を変えやっと生きていけるだけのお金をかせぎ芸もみがいたわ。
We had to change locations in that small town in order to make enough money to survive, and improved our skills.

そうして何年かすぎたころ、旅めぐりのサーカス団が街にやって来た。そして、わたしたちは新しい芸を習おうとそのサーカスで働かせてもらったの。
After a few years had passed, a traveling circus came to town on a tour. And so, we learned new skills working at the circus.



そこで、ボルガンに初めて会ったの。最初、彼はサーカス団の団長の息子だって紹介されたの。でも、火吹きの芸の他に下男みたいな仕事もさせられていた。
That was where we met Bolgan for the first time. At first, he was introduced to us as the son of the circus master. But, aside from his firebreathing performance, it seemed more like he was being forced to work as a servant.

本当は、借金のカタに売られたんだけどそれが知られると、都市同盟の辺りじゃつかまるんで、団長の息子ってことになってたの。
The truth, that he was sold to pay off excess debts, would get them caught by the United City-States, and so they arranged to pass him off as the leader's son.

あんまり、その扱いがひどいんでアイリが怒ったことがあるの。団員とケンカしてね・・・かなうわけなんかなかったんだけど。そして、その夜ボルガンにいっしょに逃げようと持ちかけたわ。
He was being treated so horribly that Eilie became angry. She got in a fight with one of the troupe members...though nothing came of the match. That night, she proposed that we'd run away with Bolgan.

こんなところ、逃げようって。いっしょに旅まわりをすれば生きていけるって。でもボルガンは、ゆっくりと首をふったの。そして言った。いつか、必ず借金を返して、そしたらこの街に戻って来るから、その時はいっしょに旅をしようって。
We'd run away from that place. We'd make a living traveling around together. But Bolgan slowly shook his head. And then he spoke. One day, without fail, the debt would be repaid, and he'd be able to go back to the village; when that time came he'd travel with us.

ボルガンがどうして、借金のカタに売られたのかは知らなかった。でも、それをきちんと払い終えることは大事なことだったんだと思う。
Bolgan didn't know why he had been sold for the debt. But he very seriously believed that he would pay it off and neatly finish things.

だから、わたしたちは街にとどまって生活をつづけた。数年後に、ボルガンがやって来るまでね。
And so, we continued our lives in that village. Several years later, Bolgan came around.



リィナ
「昔話はここでおしまい。どう？同情した？」
Rina
"And there I'll finish reminiscing. So? Was it touching?"

ナッシュ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Nash
"................."

リィナ
「ふふ・・・・・それはいらないのよ。ただ、そう言うことがあったってだけだから。それにね・・・・・・・・」
Rina
"Heheh.....don't be like that. That's just how things happened, really. Besides........"

リィナは少しだけおれに近づくと、ささやいた。
Rina got just a little closer to me, and whispered.

リィナ
「あなたにだって・・・悲しい過去があるのでしょう？そう言う顔をしているわ。」
Rina
"After all, you...have a sad past don't you? With a face like that."

ナッシュ
「どうして・・・・・・・」
Nash
"How......."

リィナ
「あら、わたし占い師ですよ。ふふふ・・・・・」
Rina
"Oh, I'm a fortuneteller. Heheheh....."

どうも、彼女には全部見透かされているような気がするな・・・
I get the feeling she saw right through me, somehow...
