rikoren空環（ウツワ）市の郊外の山にある神社で生まれ育った少年、由（ユエ）。ある日、幼友達の黒狐（クロギツネ）に連れられて、冬の大祭に遊びに行く。あかあかと燈る提灯、ざわめく人影。うまれて初めて見る外の世界で、由はふたりの不思議な少年に出会う。山に戻った由がその事を神社の主のミコトに告げると、ミコトは由にこう言った。......『食事』の準備をするように。
On the outskirts of Utsuwa City is a shrine, where the boy named Yue was born and raised. One day, led by his childhood friend Kurogitsune, he goes to play at the big winter festival. Brilliantly lit paper lanterns, noisy human figures. Seeing the outside world for the first time in his life, Yue comes across two mysterious boys. When he returns to the mountain he informs the shrine master Mikoto of what happened, and she tells him this......to prepare for "The Meal."

A trio of goldfish mononoke that are always together. They appear to be on good terms with Sato-san. It's possible for them to take human form.

女学生の姿をしているが、歴としたもののけ。神社のもののけ達とは馴れ合わず、街を縄張りに、二人で行動している。
Despite their appearance as schoolgirls, these two are fully-fledged mononoke. Rather than bonding with the mononoke at the shrine, they've marked the town as their territory.

千年マートという商店の看板猫。街での出来事に詳しく、情報屋とも呼ばれている。黒狐とは旧知の仲らしい。
The spokescat of a store called Sennen Mart. Also known as an information broker who can relate the town's goings-on in minute detail. Apparently an old friend of Kurogitsune's.

灯吾の父。売れない小説家で、バイトをしている。子煩悩な父親だが、息子達には軽くあしらわれている。
Tougo's father. As a not-very-well-known novelist, he works part-time jobs. He's a loving father, but a pushover with his kids.
