マリードと言う名の村にたどり着き、一目散で食堂に飛び込んだおれは、久々の食事にありついていた。
Finally I reached the village of Marid, and immediately rushed to the restaurant, as I hadn't had anything to eat in a really long time.



宿屋の娘
「お客さん、そんなにあわてて食べると後で苦しくなりますよ。」
Tavern Girl
"Sir, if you keep scarfing it down like that you're going to hurt afterwards."

ナッシュ
「こう見えても大食いには自信があるんだ。心配ご無用さ。」
Nash
"I might look this way but I'm pretty confident in my eating ability. No need to worry."

宿屋の娘
「うふふっ、変な自信ですね。あ、そろそろ行かなくちゃ・・・・」
Tavern Girl
"Heheheh, that's a weird thing to be confident about. Ah, I've got to go now....."



少女は小走りに出て行った。なんだか、うれしそうだったが・・・・まぁ、いいか。今はそれよりも、食事だ。
The girl scurried off. Somehow, she seemed happy....Ah, whatever. My meal's what's important right now.

唐突に声をかけられおれはのどをつまらせ、せきこむ。ふりむくと、街道で会った大男が間近に立っていた。一度ならず二度までも・・・・
I choked at the sudden greeting, starting a violent coughing fit. Turning around, it turned out the giant I'd met on the main road was standing nearby. To see him not once, but twice....

「あんた・・・・・・」
Nash
"You......"

「・・・・・・・・・・・って、おい、それだけなのかよ・・・・」
Nash
"...........H-hey, was that it...."

あの体格に、気配を感じさせない立ち振る舞い、歴戦の戦士に違いないのだろうが、なんと言うか・・・・・つかみどころのない男だな・・・・・・・
To be unable to sense his movements when he's got a physique like that, he's got to be a veteran warrior or, how should I say it.....he's a real elusive guy.......

ナッシュ
「ふぅ・・・・・やっと、ひとごこちついたな。なぁ、ちょっといいかな？」
Nash
"Sigh.....Finally, someone who can talk. Hey, can I ask you something?"



メイド
「はい？・・・・・・・ひょっとして、まだ注文する気ですか？」
Maid
"Yes?.......By any chance, is this another order?"

ナッシュ
「腹八分目って言うからな、これぐらいにしとくよ。それより、この村に交易所はあるかい？」
Nash
"I don't want to stuff myself, so this should be enough. Aside from that, is there a trading post in this village?"

メイド
「お兄さん、交易商人だったんですか？」
Maid
"Mister, are you a trader?"

ナッシュ
「手持ちの金の分はこのとおり、すっかり腹におさまってしまったから、なにかを換金しておかないとね。」
Nash
"If I'm going to have enough cash on hand to fill my stomach, I've got to make some money, y'know."

メイド
「ああ、それでしたら、通りをまっすぐ行けば看板が出てますから、わかりますよ。」
Maid
"Oh, in that case, go straight down the road and you'll see the sign, it's easy to find."

ナッシュ
「ありがとう。・・・・・・・・ところで、もう一つ聞きたいんだが。」
Nash
"Thanks. ........By the way, I'd like to ask another question."

メイド
「はい？」
Maid
"Yes?"

ナッシュ
「さっきまでいた娘さんは誰なんだい？」
「サンドイッチを作ってくれないかな。」
Nash
> "Who was that girl earlier?" (Secret +1)

「ジョナお嬢さんのことですか？あらあら、お客さん、ひょっとして？」
Maid
"Do you mean Miss Jonah? Oh my, sir, is that how it is?"

ナッシュ
「そう言うわけじゃないけど、ちょっと気になったのでね。お嬢さん、てことは、この宿の娘さんかい？」
Nash
"I didn't mean it like that, I was just curious. But to be called Miss, is she the daughter of the innkeeper?"

メイド
「ええ、そうですよ。でも残念、一足遅かったですね。お嬢さんたら、ついさっき、ピクニックに出かけましたよ。なんでも、ある国の大統領の息子だかなんだか言う人といっしょに。もちろん、ご主人には内緒でね。でも、あの男、本当に・・・・」
Maid
"Oh, I see. I'm very sorry, I overstepped my boundaries. Just now, the Miss went out for a picnic. Actually, she went together with someone who called himself the president's son. Of course it's being kept a secret from the master. But, that boy, he's really...."



宿屋の主人
「こらっ！油を売っているヒマがあるなら、早く片づけをすませておけ！」
Innkeeper
"You-! If you've got time to dawdle, hurry up and finish cleaning up!"



メイド
「は、はい！すみません！！」
Maid
"Y-yes! I'm sorry!!"



メイド
「もぅ、お客さんが変なこと聞くから、怒られちゃったじゃないですか。」
Maid
"Geez, it's because of your weird questions that I ended up getting told off."

ナッシュ
「いや、すまなかったな。そうだ。サンドイッチを作ってくれないか。」
Nash
"Sorry, I didn't mean to get you in trouble. Oh, right. Could you get me a sandwich?"

メイド
「はい、わかりました。でも、お客さん、よく食べますね。まるで何日も飲まず食わずだったみたいですね。あ・・・・そうそう、お嬢さんを狙っているなら、やめておいたほうがいいですよ。うちのご主人ったら、こわいんだから。自慢の娘に手を出した男がいるなんてわかったら・・・・・・・・」
Maid
"Sure, coming right up. But sir, you really eat a lot. It's as if you haven't had anything to eat or drink for days. Ah....I just remembered, if you're aiming for the Miss, it'd be best if you just give up. The master of this house is a scary guy. If a guy gets involved with his pride and joy, who knows what might happen........"

ナッシュ
「あ、あぁ、わかったよ。ふぅ・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Nash
"R-right, I got it. Sigh............"

それにしても、ここはずいぶんとのどかな村だな。クリスタルバレーは、もう目の前だと言うのにこんな場所もあったのか・・・・・
At any rate, this seems like a really peaceful village. It's pretty surprising, considering how close it is to Crystal Valley.....

ナッシュ
「ん？あれは・・・・・・・」
Nash
"Hm? That's......."



フッチ
「ははは、ブライト、あわてなくても大丈夫だよ。」
Futch
"Hahaha, you don't have to be in such a rush, Bright."

ブライト
「クァッ、クァッ。」
Bright
"Kuah, kuah."

フッチ
「こら、こぼしてるじゃないか。しょうがないなぁ。」
Futch
"Hey, you don't have to complain. If you insist."

ブライト
「クァー。クァッ？クァクァッ！」
Bright
"Kuaa. Kuah? Kuakuah!"

フッチ
「え？」
Futch
"Huh?"



ナッシュ
「よっ、お二人さん。さっきはすまなかったな。えーと・・・・」
Nash
"Yo, you guys. Sorry 'bout that thing a while back. Uhh...."

フッチ
「フッチです。こっちこそ、すみませんでした。あの時は、てっきり・・・」
Futch
"I'm Futch. I'd like to apologize, too. That time, I was really..."

ナッシュ
「おれはナッシュだ。そいつを、さらって行こうとしているとでも思ったのかい？」
Nash
"I'm Nash. You thought I was going to run off with the little guy, didn't you?"

フッチ
「ええ、ちょっと目を離したら急にいなくなって、あわてて探していたらブライトが叫んでいて・・・・」
Futch
"Yes, I looked away for just a moment and suddenly he was gone, and when I was searching frantically for him I heard Bright crying out...."

ナッシュ
「ははは、すまなかったな。」
Nash
"Hahaha, sorry."

ブライト
「クァックァッ。」
Bright
"Kuahkuah."

ナッシュ
「ん？・・・・・・・あぁ、こいつが欲しいのか？」
Nash
"Hm? .......Oh, you want this?"

見れば、子竜の視線は、おれが持っていたサンドイッチに釘付けになっていた。
It looks like the little dragon's gaze is fixed on the sandwich I'm holding, as if he's become transfixed by it.



ブライト
「クァックァーッ！」
Bright
"Kuahkuaah!"



フッチ
「こらっ！ブライト！！」
Futch
"Hey-! Bright!!"

ナッシュ
「いいっていいって。ほら、たくさん食って大きくなれよ。」
Nash
"Easy there, easy. Hey, if you eat a lot you'll grow up big."

ブライト
「クァーッ！！」
Bright
"Kuaah!!"

フッチ
「急に大きくなられるのも、困りものなんですけどね・・・・」
Futch
"If he grew up that fast, it'd be really troublesome...."

ナッシュ
「ん？どうして？」
Nash
"Hm? Why's that?"

フッチ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・ぼくたち、クリスタルバレーにある神殿を目指しているんですけど・・・・・これ以上、大きくなったら目立ち過ぎて・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"............Well, we're heading for the temple at Crystal Valley.....Once we're there, something that huge would attract a lot of attention.........."

ナッシュ
「神殿って・・・・『一つの神殿』に何の用があるんだ？」
Nash
"The temple....What d'you want with the One Temple?"



フッチ
「ブライトが、本当の竜かどうか調べるためです・・・・・・・・・・・ぼく、以前は、竜洞騎士団にいました。騎士見習いだったけど・・・・・・・・でも、そこでブラックを・・・騎竜を失って・・そして、竜騎士の掟にしたがって竜洞を出ることになったんです。」
Futch
"It's to figure out whether or not Bright's a real dragon...........I used to live in the Dragon Knights' Domain. I was an apprentice........but my dragon, Black...I lost him..so according to Dragon Knight law, I had to leave the Dragon's Den."

ナッシュ
「ふーーーん。」
Nash
"Hmmmm."

フッチ
「ぼくが再び、竜騎士に戻るには新たな竜と心を通じる必要があるんです。」
Futch
"In order to become a dragon knight again, I need to find and connect with a new dragon."

ナッシュ
「竜ってのは、そんなそこらにいる生き物なのか？あんまり、ゾッとしない話だが。」
Nash
"Is there anywhere you can actually find dragons? Seems like a really unappealing job."

フッチ
「いえ、普通は竜洞以外で竜が生まれることはほとんどありません。だから、ぼくが竜騎士に戻れる可能性はほとんどありませんでした。ただ・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"No, dragons aren't usually born outside of the Dragons' Den. So it's not really likely that I'll be able to go back to being a dragon knight. But still........"

ナッシュ
「？」
Nash
"?"

フッチ
「竜洞の伝承では竜は、もともとこの世界の生き物じゃないって言われています。『翼と鱗（うろこ）の世界』と言う別の世界からこの世界に来た生き物だって。」
Futch
"There is a legend in the Dragons' Den, about how dragons were originally not from this world. It is said they came to this world from the World of Wings and Scales."

ナッシュ
「別世界？それが関係あるのか？」
Nash
"Another world? Do they really have some connection to that?"

フッチ
「はい。そして、その世界からほんの時折、母竜が、この世界にやって来て卵を産むんです。」
Futch
"Yes. And also, on very rare occasions, a female dragon might come to this world from that one in order to lay her eggs."

ナッシュ
「その卵を騎士団が育てるってわけか。」
Nash
"Then the Knights raise those eggs, huh."

フッチ
「ええ、竜洞に産み落とされた卵なら・・・・でも、ほんの時折、竜洞以外で産み落とされる卵があります。そして・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"Yes, if the eggs are laid in the Dragons' Den....But, sometimes, those eggs might be laid somewhere else. And then........"

ナッシュ
「それが、そいつ・・・ブライトだって言うのかい？」
Nash
"That kind of situation...Are you talking about Bright?"

フッチ
「いえ、まだ・・・わからないんです。それを確かめるために、神殿に行かなくちゃいけないんです。」
Futch
"Well, maybe...I don't know. In order to investigate that, I have to go to the temple."

ナッシュ
「この小さいのが、伝説の竜ねぇ・・・・・・・・・・」
Nash
"So this tiny little thing is a mythical dragon huh.........."

フッチ
「すみません。でも、はっきりさせないと・・・・神殿に行って・・・・・・」
Futch
"I'm sorry. But we won't be sure about that....until we go to the temple......"

ナッシュ
「！」
Nash
"!"



ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"................"



フッチ
「ハンフリーさん、どうしたんですか？」
Futch
"Sir Humphrey, what's wrong?"

ハンフリー
「フッチ・・・・・・・・おまえの荷物だ。・・・・・・・つぎの村に行くぞ。」
Humphrey
"Futch........here's your bag. .......We're going to the next village."

ナッシュ
「・・・・・・何か面倒ごとかい？」
Nash
"......Is something wrong?"

ハンフリー
「ブライトを見られた・・・・・村人たちがおびえている・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"The villagers saw Bright.....They're afraid of him........"



フッチ
「・・・・そう・・・・ですか・・・・・」
Futch
"....Is....that so....."

ナッシュ
「どうしてだ？宿屋の連中はみんな気さくで、居心地は良さそうだったが？」
Nash
"Why? Weren't the people at the inn all acting friendly and welcoming?"

ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・出るそうだ・・・・」
Humphrey
"...........Thought we were leaving...."

フッチ
「出るって？いったい何が出るんですか？」
Futch
"Leaving? Where exactly do they expect us to go?"

ハンフリー
「うむ、それが・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"Uh huh, that's......."



ブライト
「クアァァァァッ！！！！？？？」
Bright
"KUAaaaah!!!!???"

突然ブライトが空を見上げて大きな声をあげた。おれたちも揃って空を見上げたが、晴れ渡った空には何も見えない。
Suddenly Bright looked up at the sky and started crying out loudly. We all looked up too, but the sky was completely clear.



フッチ
「ブライト！？」
Futch
"Bright!?"

ブライト
「クァァァッ！！クァァァァァーーーーーー！！！！！」
Bright
"Kuaaah!! Kuaaaaa------!!!!!"

ナッシュ
「どうしたってんだ？」
Nash
"What's gotten into him?"

フッチ
「ブライト！！落ち着くんだ！！！！」
Futch
"Bright!! Calm down!!!!"



ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"..................."



ブライト
「クァーーーーーッ！！！クァッ、クアッ、クァァァァァ！！！」
Bright
"Kuaaaaaah!!! Kuah, KUAH, Kuaaaaa!!!"

フッチ
「竜・・・・黒い竜・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"A dragon....a black dragon........"

ナッシュ
「なんだ？竜洞騎士団の竜じゃないのか？」
Nash
"What? Isn't it one of the Dragon Knights' dragons?"

フッチ
「違います！竜洞騎士団の騎竜が騎士なしで飛ぶことはありません！！あれは・・・はぐれ竜・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"Of course not! Dragons from the Dragon Knights' Domain don't fly without a rider!! That's a...rogue dragon........"

ナッシュ
「はぐれ竜って・・・・・・・・・」
Nash
"A rogue dragon........."

ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・街道筋で聞いたうわさだ・・・数年前から、この辺りに時折黒い竜がやって来て、家畜を食い荒らすと・・・それだけでなく・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
".......I've heard rumors on the main highway...Since a few years back, a black dragon has been coming here every once in a while and devouring livestock...Not only that........"

フッチ
「うっ・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"Urgh............."

おれたちが話している間にも、黒竜はぐんぐんと近づき、町の上空に来ると、一気に高度を下げた。
Even as we spoke, the black dragon was steadily approaching, at once swooping high above the town.



ハンフリー
「・・・・・・仕方ない・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"......No helping it......."

ナッシュ
「村に戻るのか？」
Nash
"Are you going back to the village?"



フッチ
「待ってください！！ぼくも行きます！！！」
Futch
"Please wait!! I'm going with you!!!"



ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・だめだ・・・村人たちがおびえるだけだ・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"...........You can't...The villagers will panic........."



フッチ
「でも・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"But........"

ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"............"

しっかりと槍を握りしめたフッチを、ハンフリーが無言で諭す。
Futch tightened his grip on his spear under Humphrey's silent admonishment.

ナッシュ
「化け物退治は、おれたちに任せてここで待ってな・・・・・・どれだけ、歯がたつかわからんが・・・・」
Nash
"You wait here and leave the monster extermination to us, okay......Dunno how much we can do though...."



フッチ
「違う！！」
Futch
"You're wrong!!"

ナッシュ
「？」
Nash
"?"

フッチ
「竜は・・・竜は化け物じゃない・・・・」
Futch
"Dragons aren't...dragons aren't monsters...."



ハンフリー
「フッチ・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"Futch........"

ナッシュ
「すまんな。だが、あれが村を襲うつもりなら、やっぱり化け物に違いはない。」
Nash
"Sorry. But if it's going to attack the village, I'm not wrong in calling it a monster anyway."

ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"................"



フッチ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"............."

フッチとブライトを残して、おれはハンフリーと共に走り出す。すでに町には人々の悲鳴が上がっていて、竜のものらしき咆吼まで聞こえていた。
Leaving Futch and Bright behind, Humphrey and I run off together. Already screams were rising up from everyone in the village, and we could hear the dragon's answering roar.
