Suikogaiden 2 Chapter 3 - Stray Dragon

オウランと名乗った格闘家のおかげで、おれたちは結局、竜退治に行くことになってしまった。
Thanks to that fighter by the name of Oulan, in the end we found ourselves going dragon-hunting.

取りあえず宿に静けさが戻り、村の人々もそれぞれの家に帰って行った。
For the time being, peace had returned to the inn, and the villagers had each gone back to their respective homes.



バッツ
「さっきは、取り乱しちまってすまなかったな。おわびと言っちゃなんだが、晩飯は奮発しといたよ。明日のために力をつけてくれよな。」
Butz
"Just now, sorry about blowing up like that. As an apology, why don't we say dinner's on the house. Build up your strength for tomorrow."

すっかり落ち着きを取り戻したバッツが、すまなそうな顔で料理を乗せたお盆を運んで来る。黒竜退治は、善は急げとばかりに明日出発と決まり、今晩はこの宿で休むことになった。
Having completely regained his composure, an apologetic-looking Butz brought out a tray loaded with dishes. As it'd already been decided we were going to hunt the black dragon tomorrow, tonight we were going to rest at this inn.

ナッシュ
「さっきの光に飲まれたって話だが、いったい何のことなんだろうな？」
Nash
"That weird talk about light from earlier, what exactly was that all about?"

バッツ
「さぁ、おれもあんな話、初耳だし、そもそも、竜に襲われて戻って来たのはあいつが初めてだからな・・・・・・」
Butz
"Well, I'd never heard of it before either, before that guy who showed up after the dragon attack......"

ナッシュ
「フッチ、心当たりはあるか？」
Nash
"Futch, any ideas?"



フッチ
「いえ・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"No........"

フッチはそう答えたものの、顔はうつむいたままだった。まだ、黒竜退治に乗り気ではないのだろう。
While he answered well enough, Futch's face remained downcast. Still, he's probably just not very eager about hunting down that black dragon.

フッチ
「そんな特殊な力を持った竜なんて、聞いたことありません・・・・・・」
Futch
"For a dragon to use such a unique power, I've never heard of it happening before......"

ナッシュ
「なんだか不気味だな・・・・・・」
Nash
"Well that's just a little ominous......"



オウラン
「竜相手なんだ。楽に勝てるわけがないだろう？」
Oulan
"Our opponent's a dragon. No such thing as an easy win with one of those, right?"

シーナ
「おれも、なんだかさっぱりわからなくて、気がついたら、ジョナが消えてたんでここまで急いで戻って来たんだ。」
Sheena
"I don't really have a clue either, but, y'know, that's why I rushed back here so fast."

オウラン
「ちゃんと道は覚えてるんだろうね？明日行ったら、何もありませんでしたじゃすまないよ。」
Oulan
"And you've perfectly memorized the path you took right? If there's nothing in your head when we leave tomorrow, you're gonna be sorry."

シーナ
「そ、それは大丈夫・・・・・・・だ。」
Sheena
"I-it'll be.......fine."

ナッシュ
「まあ、いじめるのはそれぐらいに・・・・」
Nash
"Well, that's something like bullying...."



フッチ
「・・・・・・・・・ごちそうさまでした。」
Futch
".........Thank you for the food."



突然席を立ったフッチは、そう言い残し、ブライトを抱いて食堂を出て行ってしまった。
Futch suddenly got up from his seat, and with those words, carried Bright with him out of the dining hall.



オウラン
「相変わらずだな、あの子は。」
Oulan
"Same as ever, that kid."



ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"................"



何か思うところがあるのか、ハンフリーは無言で席を立つと、階上へと上がって行った。
Having apparently thought of something, Humphrey wordlessly got up from his seat, and made his way upstairs.

ハンフリーのあとを追う
余計なことはしないでおく

フッチは窓辺に座ってブライトを抱き、開かれた窓から月を見上げている。
Futch is sitting by the open window with Bright on his lap, looking up at the moon.

窓から吹き込む夜風にフッチの髪が揺れる。ブライトは風とじゃれるように、首をもたげて鼻をひくつかせた。
The night air blowing in through the window makes his hair sway. It catches Bright's attention as well, and he lifts his head to sniff at it.

フッチ
「あのはぐれ竜も、幼い頃はブライトみたいに無邪気だったんだろうに・・・・」
Futch
"That rogue dragon, it was probably an innocent baby like Bright once too...."

ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・そうだな・・・・」
Humphrey
"............Yeah...."

二人はそう言ったまま、しばらく黙り込んだ。フッチは、黒竜のことを考えているのだろう。そしてハンフリーは、そんなフッチを気にかけているに違いない。何と言って部屋に入って行こう？おれがそんな思いを巡らせているうちに、再びハンフリーが口を開いた。
Having said that, the two lapse into silence for a little while. Futch is probably thinking about that black dragon. As for Humphrey, he's definitely worrying about Futch. How could I walk in on a scene like that? Just when I was thinking of turning around and going back inside, Humphrey opened his mouth again.

ハンフリー
「フッチ・・・・おまえは村人たちを、どう思った？」
Humphrey
"Futch....what are your thoughts on the villagers?"

フッチ
「どうって・・・・竜を憎んで、それで怒っていて・・・・・」
Futch
"My thoughts.... The fact they hate dragons so much, it makes me angry....."

ハンフリー
「それだけじゃない。彼らの怒り、その真の姿は、彼らの悲しみの声だ。竜をただ竜だからと言うことで憎んでいるわけではない。」
Humphrey
"Not just that. Their anger, their sorrow, they voice their true feelings out loud. You can say a dragon's just a dragon but that doesn't mean they'll stop hating it."

フッチ
「たとえ、そうだとしても・・・・・・・ぼくには、竜を倒すなんて・・・・・・・できないよ・・・・」
Futch
"But, even if that's right....... For me, to fell a dragon....... I can't do it...."

ハンフリー
「確かに、はぐれ竜は哀れだ。だが、村人も・・・・・・」
Humphrey
"Of course, the rogue dragon is pitiful. But the villagers, too......"



フッチ
「だからって、ぼくたちに竜を裁く権利なんかあるの！？あの竜は、一人ぼっちでも一生懸命に生きようとしているんだ！！それを！！！その命を奪う権利が、ぼくたちにあるって言うの！？」
Futch
"I know, but what right do we have to judge that dragon!? It must have been very hard for it, living alone like that!! So!!! For us to snatch away its life like that, who says we have that right!?"



ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
".................."

フッチ
「”竜はみんな同じ”ぼくもそう思うよ。でも、村の人たちと同じ意味でそう言うんじゃない。竜にだって、生きる権利があるはずでしょ？竜洞騎士団の竜のように、この、ブライトのように！！」
Futch
"'Dragons are all the same,' I think that way too. But, I don't mean the same thing the villagers said. Even a dragon has a right to live, doesn't it? For the Dragon Knight dragons' sakes, and for, for Bright's sake!!"

ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Humphrey
".................."



フッチ
「だから・・・・・ぼくは・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"That's why.....I........."

ハンフリー
「フッチ・・・・・・・・・竜を思いやる気持ちはわかる。だが、それで本当にいいのか？あの暴れ竜をこのまま放置しておいたらどうなると思う？」
Humphrey
"Futch.........I know you feel sympathy for dragons. But, is that really okay? What do you think will happen if we leave that violent dragon to keep causing mischief?"



フッチ
「どうなるって・・・・・それは・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
"What will happen..... That's..............."

ハンフリー
「村人たちの言動を忘れたわけではあるまい。皆、竜に対して敵意を抱いている。おまえが竜を気高い生き物だと思うなら、竜を皆の誤解から守ってやらなければならないのではないか？その気高さを守り通してやらなければならないのではないか？」
Humphrey
"Don't forget a single one of the words those villagers said. All of them hold hostility against dragons. If you think dragons are such noble creatures then, don't you have to protect them from everyone's misunderstanding? Don't you have to keep protecting its honor?"

フッチ
「・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
".........."

ハンフリー
「・・・・・・・フッチ、わかっているはずだ。主無きはぐれ竜は、その辛さからもがき苦しみ続ける。」
Humphrey
".......Futch, I understand. That ownerless dragon, it's going to keep struggling painfully like that."

フッチ
「・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・」
Futch
".................."

ハンフリーは、うなだれたフッチの肩に軽く手を置いた。どうやら、おれの出番はなかったようだ。おれは静かに扉を閉じ、二人をそのままにして、階段を降りた。階段の踊り場の窓から空を見上げると、月が優しい光で町を包んでいた。
As Futch drooped his head, Humphrey lightly placed a hand on his shoulder. By the looks of it, I probably wasn't going to be getting my turn. I quietly closed the door, leaving the two like that, and headed back down the stairs. Looking up at the sky from the stairway landing, the moon seemed to kindly wrap the town in its light.

そうだな・・・・よそ者のおれが口を出すことじゃない。フッチのことは、ハンフリーにまかせておけば心配無い。おれは再び、テーブルに向き直った。
That's right....a stranger like me shouldn't try to interrupt their conversation. I'll leave Futch to Humphrey, and stop worrying about it. Once again, I turn back to the table.



シーナ
「なあ、あんた？あの二人と旅をしてるのか？」
Sheena
"Hey, you? Are you traveling with those two?"

ナッシュ
「いや、たまたまこの村で知り合って、一緒に暴れ竜騒動に巻き込まれちまったのさ。」
Nash
"No, we just happened to meet here in this village, and got dragged into that rogue dragon attack together is all."



オウラン
「そいつは災難だったね。」
Oulan
"What an unlucky guy."

ナッシュ
「そう言うあんたらは二人で旅してるのか？」
Nash
"Speaking of which, are you two traveling together?"

オウラン
「まさか。あたしは、ある人に頼まれてクリスタルバレーまでの護衛をうけおってここまで来たのさ。そこに、なんだか知らないけどチョロチョロくっついて来る男が一人いたってだけ。」
Oulan
"Of course not. I'm under contract, to act as his escort to Crystal Valley. Once we get there, I don't care where that guy goes but he'll be doing it very much alone."



シーナ
「ちぇっ、そりゃないぜ。こっちも、遊学のための旅で、”たまたま”行き先がいっしょだったからじゃあ、一緒に行こうかって・・・・」
Sheena
"Tch, that's not how it goes. I'm on this trip to study abroad, and we just 'happened' to be going in the same direction, so we decided to travel together...."

オウラン
「町に寄るたびに女の子を口説いて回るのが遊学とは、のん気なもんだね。」
Oulan
"Hitting on girls and leading them around at every town we visit, that definitely feels like studying abroad."

シーナ
「え、それは・・・そのぉ・・・・・・」
Sheena
"Er, that's...thaat......"

オウラン
「その？」
Oulan
"That?"



シーナ
「それは・・・まぁ、この先さぁ人を率いて行こうってことになれば、どんな人がどんな考えを持っているかそれを知るのは大事なことだろ？？」
Sheena
"That's...well, if I go out and become a great commander from this, anybody would think this would have been an important experience right??"

オウラン
「口だけは達者だな。」
Oulan
"All you've got is a smart mouth."

オウランはそう言って、大きなため息をついた。おれもやっぱり、シーナの口八丁に、半ば呆れながらも、それも一つの才能だろうかと感心していた。
Oulan
With those words, Oulan heaves a huge sigh. While I'm half amazed at Sheena's eloquence, I have to admit I also get the feeling that's his only talent.



ナッシュ
「どうだった？」
Nash
"How did it go?"

ハンフリー
「・・・・・たぶん、大丈夫だろう。だが・・・・・・・・・・少し、一人にしてやってくれ・・・・・・」
Humphrey
".....It's alright, probably. But.......... Let's leave him alone, for a little while......"



オウラン
「結局は、自分自身で決めることさ。他人は、見守ることしかできない。」
Oulan
"In the end, we've still got to decide for ourselves. For others, all they can do is watch over us."



シーナ
「さあて、そろそろ戻るかな。明日の準備もあるしな。」
Sheena
"Well then, I hope he comes around eventually. We've still got to prepare for tomorrow."

オウラン
「そりゃいい心がけだね。」
Oulan
"That's a good attitude."

シーナ
「うるさいな。それより、そっちも飲みすぎるなよ。」
Sheena
"Shut up. While I'm at it, don't drink too much."

オウラン
「はははははは。」
Oulan
"Hahahahahaha."

宿に静けさが戻っていた。おれも自分の部屋に戻り、ベッドに横たわって、窓からのぞいた月を見ていた。
Silence returned to the inn. I went back to my room as well, lay down in the bed, and looked out the window at the moon.


クリスタルバレー・・・・そこで待っているだろう戦い・・・・そして、ユーリのことを考えていた。
Crystal Valley....seems to be waiting for a coming battle.... And, I can't help thinking about Julie.

あいつもこの月を見ているだろうか？今は何を想っているのだろうか？
Is she looking at the same moon? What could she be thinking right now?

？？？？
「では、兄さんは無事にカレリアを越えたのですね・・・・」
????
"So, Brother made it safely out of Caleria...."

？？？？
「ああ、既にクリスタルバレーの近くまで来ているはず。」
????
"Yeah, he's probably managed to get somewhere near Crystal Valley by now."



ユーリ
「よかった・・・・・無事にいてくれたのですね・・・・・」
Julie
"I'm glad.....that he made it out safely....."

レナ
「でも、あいつを連れ戻すこともそして、あの晩の真実を聞き出すこともできなかった。」
Lena
"But, it's imperative for us to bring that guy back, to get the truth of what happened that night."

ユーリ
「あの晩の・・・・・・・・・」
Julie
"That night........."

レナ
「・・・・・・・・・すまない・・・・思い出させてしまった・・・・・・・」
Lena
".........I'm sorry....to make you remember that......."

ユーリ
「いえ・・・・・・大丈夫です。では・・・・兄さんは、また何も・・・・・・」
Julie
"No......it's alright. So then....Brother will, again......"

レナ
「えぇ・・・あいつは昔からそう言うやつだった。自分一人で、すべてができると・・・・ただ、一つだけ・・・・・・・あいつが教えてくれたことがある・・・・・」
Lena
"Yes...he's always been like that. He'll do it, all by himself.... But, just this once....... He's given real thought about this....."

ユーリ
「兄さんが教えてくれたこと？それは・・・・・？」
Julie
"Brother has thought about it? And that is.....?"

レナ
「ユーリ・・・・それが真実なのか、ナッシュがなぜ、そんなことを言ったのかわからないが・・・・・あいつは言った・・・・・・・・・」
Lena
"Julie....if it's the truth then, why Nash would say such a thing, I have no idea..... He said........."

？？？？
「それは、わたしから、お話しましょう。」
????
"Now that, is a story I will tell you myself."



レナ
「！！！！」
Lena
"!!!!"
