Xie Lian had always been wearing curse shackles before - no matter how downtrodden or dire his circumstances were, the curse shackles kept his body locked to that period when he'd lived the pampered life of a prince, fair-skinned and well-proportioned.
After the curse shackles were gone, Xie Lian continued living the same unrestrained lifestyle, getting lavishly and meticulously attended to at Hua Cheng's place, but whenever a prayer reached his ears he would take a random sword from the weapons shed and go out to slay monsters; even if Hua Cheng stuffed his bag full of money, or sent imps at regular intervals to deliver living expenses, Xie Lian was still in the habit of wearing the coarsest, most durable clothes, and staying in the cheapest inns. His meals were irregular, maybe eating a couple dry manto if he remembered, often forgetting to eat entirely; he ran all over the place, beating down demons across the land and scaring them witless, to the point even evil spirits in the most remote corners of China shrank into the earth at the sound of his name.
After running quite a few of these trips, the "princess" watching the house and earning money back in the Ghost City obviously missed him dearly, so when he came home--currying favor and acting coquettish aside, the first necessity was to prepare good food and tea, clear out their schedule for the next few days, take their time chatting over a nice meal, take a bath together, then change into soft comfortable clothes and snuggle into their bed; if they had the energy they might go a round, if they were tired they'd cuddle up together to sleep. The princess would say in a pitiful tone of voice, "The Ghost City has been so busy, I've had no time to practice my writing," and get a tap on the nose from the perfectly well-aware prince.
After some time like this, Xie Lian came home travel-worn as usual and ate together with Hua Cheng; when they went to bathe together, Xie Lian removed his clothes, only to have Hua Cheng stand stock-still for a good while, staring at him. He couldn't imagine why - it wasn't as if he'd sustained any injuries recently - so he asked: "San Lang, is there something off about me?"
Hua Cheng reached out and gently touched his chest, saying: "Gege...your ribs are showing."
It wasn't until Xie Lian looked down that he realized, because he'd been living so meagerly this whole time, he'd lost a surprising amount of weight; his formerly well-proportioned body now had a sunken abdomen, the ribs above his chest clearly visible, making it easy for anyone who looked at him to know how he'd been faring. He'd once leaned on the curse shackles to preserve him as he drifted around, but now that he was free of them, he'd never considered that his body would begin to actually show the effects of his lifestyle habits.
Hua Cheng had thought of this as well, regret written all over his face as he drew Xie Lian towards himself and began meticulously inspecting and cleaning him. Xie Lian on his part honestly and sincerely said: "It's my fault, I wasn't careful."
"I'm the one at fault for not paying attention," Hua Cheng said: "Gege, why don't I go together with you next time?"
"If you want to come along I'd be happy to have you, but what about your work in the Ghost City?"
"If anything comes up Yin Yu can contact me to discuss it, don't worry." Hua Cheng lowered his head to kiss him.
Xie Lian had traveled together with Hua Cheng many times before, but it hadn't occurred to him that this time Hua Cheng would be absolutely determined to support his recovery; this time while granting prayers, Hua Cheng searched for a quiet and tasteful inn to stay at, got imps to fix up the room to be as cozy as possible, insisted on a carriage to carry him if the trip was even a little long--he would have gone as far as meddling with the prayers as well, if Xie Lian hadn't pleaded with him. Instead, whenever Xie Lian came back to rest, Hua Cheng would bring out all sorts of delicacies for him to eat, always making it so Xie Lian couldn't stop eating. Any dish he commented on would be fixed to his tastes the next time, as well.
At first Xie Lian thought he'd ordered cooks to make these dishes. But one day he came back early and saw that Hua Cheng wasn't there; after searching high and low he finally found him hard at work in the kitchen. Thinking back to the roast rabbit from that year, then to the style of the recent dishes, he was suddenly hit with an overwhelming sense of joy; he then rolled up his sleeves and rushed in to help Hua Cheng cook the meal together. In the end half the dishes were delicious beyond imagining, while the other half were so bad you couldn't bare to look. Hua Cheng usually had very little interest in eating, but this time he moved Xie Lian's homemade dishes closer to his side and ate them all with relish.
Xie Lian talked about a few of his best prayers for a laugh; Hua Cheng narrowed his eyes and chuckled a bit, then helplessly said: "I feel bad seeing you work so hard on such trivial matters, Gege. From now on, why don't you leave those for my subordinates to do, and if something goes wrong, they can contact you then?"
Xie Lian thought, what he said did make sense. These days the world was praying to a demon-god pair, it's just that legends said the god had a better temper than the demon, so the more fearful and cautious followers tended to prefer praying to him; but now Hua Cheng felt bad for him, and he didn't necessarily have to deal with every matter in person. He smiled and said: "That's perfectly fine with me, then I'll have more time to spend with you."
By the time the two of them finally idled their way back to the Ghost City, Yin Yu had long since finished organizing any reports that needed Hua Cheng's ruling - enough to cover the desk - and had discreetly placed them in a room Xie Lian rarely visited. It took a full day, but Hua Cheng eventually finished the work.
Xie Lian this time had settled in at Qiandeng Monastery. By the time Hua Cheng returned, he'd already washed and changed, and was currently sitting on the bed with his shirt open, poking at his stomach.
Hua Cheng couldn't resist exclaiming at the sight of that dazzling, snow-white skin: "Gege?"
Xie Lian looked up at him, looking caught between laughter and tears as he rubbed his stomach: "San Lang...I've grown a belly."
Hua Cheng swallowed the sudden apprehension that he might have accidentally swallowed a seed or egg of some sort, his eyes focused on the sight of Xie Lian's slender fingers sinking into that soft white belly...he couldn't control himself from walking up to the bed and reaching a hand towards Xie Lian's stomach.
So soft...
Soft smooth skin and soft belly fat bulged between his fingers; Hua Cheng kneaded it, then kneaded some more, really seeming unable to stop himself; Xie Lian tried as hard as he could to endure it, but finally couldn't take it any longer and burst into loud peals of laughter: "That really tickles ahahahaha!"
"Gehahahaha!"
"Stop, please stop!"
"You're terrible! Hahaha!"
Hua Cheng's hand stopped moving. When Xie Lian glanced at him, he said: "Gege, this isn't enough."
He said this with the most pitiful look on his face, and Xie Lian laughed again: "Hahaha...San Lang, there's no need to be modest with me. You can do whatever it is you like."
So Hua Cheng took a deep breath, and plunged his face into Xie Lian's soft belly.
Speaking honestly, it would be horrendously embarrassing if word got out that the number one martial god had actually managed to get fat; Xie Lian frantically trained with his sword for the next few days, not coming home until he was gasping for breath late in the evening, and eventually managed to turn that bit of flab back into strong, supple muscle. But it seemed that Hua Cheng had fallen in love with the feeling of burying his face in Xie Lian's belly, and continued to do so regardless of whether it was soft and flabby or supple and tough, completely forgetting himself in his enjoyment.

"San Lang, I've found a nice inn to stay at; their bedding is very soft, and the food is quite good, so I'll be working around there for a while. You can come by too, if you find the time."
Thus went the spiritual communication Hua Cheng received from Xie Lian.
Ever since that time they went out together, Xie Lian could finally be said to have fixed his bad habit of toughing it out; he now knew to send out imps or ask around for a nice place to stay, would eat proper meals, and if he did sleep outside he'd make sure to prepare necessities beforehand, instead of going out empty-handed.
Hua Cheng pulled out the copybook Xie Lian had left for him, picked out...one page, and decided to write a few words, to celebrate.
